Matty is back alongside Adam McGrath and Chris Roots for a massive Stradbroke Day preview on Bolting In, with Eagle Farm hosting one of the biggest cards of the Winter Carnival.
The boys dive straight into the two Group 1’a, starting with the JJ Atkins, where a fascinating group of two-year-olds step up to the mile. It’s the ultimate test for juveniles at the end of the season, and this year’s field looks wide open, despite the market gravitating towards Tron Bolt after his dominant last-start win. There’s plenty of debate around whether he deserves to be as short as he is, with horses like Berzelius coming through the Sires’ Produce, Martist looking unlucky in the same race, and a handful of lightly raced types like Cormier and Stormy Marco adding intrigue depending on track conditions and tempo.
They also break down the Stradbroke Handicap, Queensland’s premier sprint, where a deep and competitive field lines up over 1400 metres for $3 million. The race looks as open as ever, with Headley Grange bringing elite form through the Kingsford Smith Cup, Fangirl looming as a major threat for the Waller-McDonald combination, and proven performers like Private Eye adding plenty of depth. With a big field, tricky barriers and the likelihood of a soft track, there are plenty of angles to work through, and as always in the Stradbroke, the boys weigh up whether the favourites are worth trusting in a historically unpredictable race.
Beyond the two features, they cover the rest of a stacked program, highlighting runners to follow and a few at odds that could surprise on a day where tempo and track pattern are going to be crucial.
As always, they lock in their Best Bets across the card to wrap things up. If you’re playing at Eagle Farm this weekend, this is your full guide to a huge Stradbroke Day.
