Final Thoughts: The
Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz – both aiming to keep pace with their respective conferences’ front-runners – square off for the second time this season.
The Jazz grabbed a 106-104 win over the visiting 76ers four weeks ago. Donovan Mitchell (24 pts, 5 reb, 8 ast) and Rudy Gobert (14 pts, 16 reb) were the standouts for Utah, while Joel Embiid (27 pts, 16 reb) shone in a losing effort.
The 14-6 Sixers are fifth in the Eastern Conference, winning seven of their last eight. Some clutch last-quarter steals from Ben Simmons were crucial to back-to-back nail-biters against the Knicks and Pacers in their last two games.
Meanwhile, Embiid has reacted to being held scoreless in Toronto – the 76ers’ only loss in the past two weeks – by averaging more than 30 points and 14 rebounds in his past three outings.
The 12-8 Jazz are sixth in the West. But they have lost three of four on their current road trip, which concludes in Philadelphia today. The Jazz were trounced 130-110 by the Raptors yesterday.
Utah’s offence is struggling, despite the addition of key pieces Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic.
Prior to last month’s defeat, the Sixers won all four encounters with the Jazz over the past two seasons.
Philadelphia won 113-107 at home last season, before Ben Simmons chalked up a triple-double in a 114-97 victory in Salt Lake City.
And while the Sixers have been up-and-down on the road, they are a perfect 9-0 at home this season. The Jazz are just 4-7 away from home.
An 8-12 overall record also does not bode well for Utah’s chances against a Philadelphia line-up that is building nicely.
