History: Played 58: Timberwolves 31 V Bucks 27
Last meeting: February 23, 2019: Bucks 140 d Timberwolves 128 at Fiserv Forum
Final Thoughts: The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to exceed expectations. But can they keep with their star big man temporarily on the sidelines when Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks come to town?
The 4-1 Timberwolves’ only loss of the season – a 117-95 defeat away to the 76ers – cost them Karl-Anthony Towns for two games due to suspension.
But they got through the first of those with flying colours, pumping the Wizards 131-109. Gorui Dieng (18 pts, 8 reb) stepped into the center role, while Andrew Wiggins posted 21 points, and Jeff Teague starred with 15 points and 13 assists.
Making their start more impressive is the fact Minnesota have played just once at home – a 116-109 win over the Heat last week. The Bucks are 2-1 on the road to date.
The 4-2 Bucks – favourites in the East – have won their last two after a patchy first week. They smashed the Magic 123-91 on the road and overwhelmed the Raptors 115-105 at home.
One-man wrecking crew Giannis Antetokounmpo went off for 36 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists against Toronto. Back-court star Eric Bledsoe is also warming into the campaign nicely.
The Bucks have won eight of their last 10 against the T-Wolves, though Minnesota have won two of the last three at Target Center.
Last season the Bucks won 125-95 in Minneapolis and 140-128 in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo put up 27 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in the latter.
This one essentially comes down to the Timberwolves’ eighth-ranked defence limiting the Giannis-led Bucks’ third-ranked offence. It’s a big ask without Towns, though, and the Bucks should cover.
