Final Thoughts: The NBA’s two best teams lock horns in one of the season’s most feverishly anticipated games to date. The 18-2 Golden State Warriors boast the league’s best record and have won seven straight. The 17-3 Phoenix Suns are on a 16-game winning streak – one short of their franchise record.
The Suns have had two days’ rest since completing a four-game roadstand, defeating the Spurs (115-111), Cavaliers (120-115), Knicks (118-97) and Nets (113-107). Devin Booker topped 30 points in each of the Suns’ last three wins. Evergreen guard Chris Paul (22 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast) was also a standout in Brooklyn.
Meanwhile, the big man rotation of tyro Deandre Ayton and veteran JaVale McGee continues to flourish.
The Warriors have been equally dominant but generally more convincing over the past month. Thirteen of their last 14 wins have come by margins of 13 or more. They are coming off a 105-90 victory over the Clippers two days ago, where runaway MVP favourite Steph Curry nailed seven three-pointers in a 33-point haul. Otto Porter Jr (18 pts, 10 reb) shone off the bench.
The Warriors are the NBA’s top defensive team and are ranked second offensively. The Suns are third and seventh in the league, respectively.
The Warriors have won 21 of their last 26 against the Suns. But Phoenix have rallied with five wins in the teams’ last eight clashes. Last season the Suns prevailed 114-93 and 120-98 at home, before the Warriors struck back with a 122-116 win in the sole San Francisco-hosted encounter.
Golden State have the NBA’s best cover record at 15-4-1. Phoenix are 11-9 against the line. The Suns – $1.74 favourites ahead of this blockbuster – are 5-5 ATS at home, while the Warriors are 6-2 ATS on the road.
This is the first time ever two teams with a winning percentage of at least .850 and seven straight wins behind them have met. Both sides will be fired up to make a statement and announce themselves as the league’s hottest. That mantle seems to best fit the Warriors at present, despite the Suns’ record-chasing exploits.
