NBA Tips – Phoenix Suns @ Dallas Mavericks

11:30 (AEDT), Fri 20th Jan @ American Airlines Center, Dallas

History: Played 179: Suns 99 V Mavericks 80

Last meeting: November 19, 2021: Suns 112 d Mavericks 104 at Footprint Center

Final Thoughts: Phoenix Suns have surged ahead at the top of the NBA standings and will look to complete a sweep of their five-game roadstand in Dallas. The Mavericks, though, are one of the league’s form teams and have mirrored the Suns’ performance in just dropping one game so far in January.

The teams met twice in Phoenix in the space of three days in November, with the Suns getting up in both. Devin Booker (24 pts, 9 reb) and Deandre Ayton (19 pts, 13 reb) starred in a 105-98 victory, while Chris Paul (18 pts, 5 reb, 14 ast) led a 112-104 win in the second clash.

Importantly, Luka Doncic missed both games – but the Mavs’ losing streak against the Suns now stands at nine games.

The 26-19 Mavericks have climbed to fifth in the West with 10 wins from their last 11 games. After losing to the Knicks last week, they have accounted for the Grizzlies (112-85), Magic (108-92), Thunder (104-102) and Raptors (102-98). Doncic caught fire against Toronto, racking up season-high points (41) and rebounds (14) tallies. Kristaps Porzingis (18 pts, 7 reb) played a solid support role to the talisman.

Suns set sights on top seed

The 34-9 Suns have won seven of their eight games this month after a mini-slump to close out 2021. They have put away Toronto (99-95), Indiana (112-94), Detroit (135-108) and San Antonio (121-107) on the road in the past nine days. Devin Booker went off for 48 points and 6 assists against the Spurs, while Chris Paul (15 pts, 12 ast) and Bismack Biyombo (17 pts, 14 reb) were superb.

Ayton is currently sidelined for Phoenix.

The Mavs have improved to 14-8 at home (10-11-1 against the start) after winning their last six at American Airlines Center. The Suns are a magnificent 17-4 on the road (13-8 ATS), winning six straight away games.

This shapes as an absorbing encounter with both sides in outstanding touch. Doncic’s presence – and recent form – negate any psychological edge the Suns may have from their home wins over the Mavs this season. But the Suns have thrived as a road favourite and I think they take out a tight one between two of league’s top four defensive teams.
