NBA Tips & Preview – Mavericks @ Warriors

The daily preview it to the rim with NBA tips as Steph Curry’s Golden State Warriors and Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks square off for the third time this season.

NBA Tips – Dallas Mavericks @ Golden State Warriors

11:30 (AEDT), Mon 28th Feb @ Chase Center, San Francisco

History: Played 173: Mavericks 89 V Warriors 84

Last meeting: January 25, 2022: Warriors 130 d Mavericks 92 at Chase Center

Final Thoughts: Golden State Warriors stormed out of the post All-Star blocks with a big win, swamping the undermanned Trail Blazers 132-95 in Portland. The second-placed Warriors shared the load around, with Steph Curry (who also had 14 assists) and Klay Thopmson leading the teams’ eight double-digit scorers with 18 points apiece.

It was a solid showing from the refreshed Warriors, who had lost four of their last five heading into the break. Thompson (illness) has been ruled out of today’s assignment.

Dallas Mavericks headed into the All-Star break in hot form, winning six of their last seven – and three 45+-point performances from Luka Doncic in their last four outings. But Doncic (23 pts, 7 reb, 11 ast) was well-contained in a 114-109 loss on the road to the Jazz on Saturday (AEDT), shooting just 8-for-24 from the floor. Big man Dwight Powell put up 22 points, while Spencer Dinwiddie (20 pts) and Davis Bertans (17 pts) impressed off the bench.

Dinwiddie and Bertans are recent arrivals in Dallas, with injury-prone Kristaps Porzingis traded away to the Wizards. Trey Burke and Marquese Chriss headline the Mavericks’ short-term injuries, while Tim Hardaway Jr underwent foot surgery earlier this month.

Season series split

The Mavericks have won seven of their last nine against the Warriors, but the ledger is square after two clashes this season. Doncic (26 pts, 7 reb, 8 ast) led a 99-82 home victory in early-January as Curry was kept to just 14 points. It was also a season-low team tally for Golden State. But the Warriors powered to a 130-92 victory in San Francisco three weeks later. Jonathan Kuminga (22 pts) top-scored for the hosts off the bench, with Curry contributing 18 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Doncic (25 pts, 8 reb) played a lone hand for the Mavs.

The Warriors are an outstanding 26-6 at home this season (17-13-2 ATS), despite dropping two of their last three at Chase Center. The Mavericks are 15-14 on the road (17-12 ATS) but have won seven of their last 11 away from Dallas.

Stop Luka, stop the Mavs is a reasonable rule of thumb – and the Warriors are the top-rated defensive team in the NBA. Dallas are ranked sixth defensively, though, and with Thompson out the home side will be looking to Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton and Jordan Poole to take some scoring pressure off Curry.

The Warriors are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games but I like them to cover the small line here on the back of a big win over the Blazers.
