NBA Tips – Dallas Mavericks @ Memphis Grizzlies

14:00 (AEDT), Sat 15th Jan @ FedEx Forum, Memphis

History: Played 106: Mavericks 74 V Grizzlies 32

Last meeting: December 8, 2021: Mavericks 104 d Grizzlies 96 at FedEx Forum

Final Thoughts: Two of the best-performed teams of 2022 so far lock horns for the third time this season. The 30-14 Memphis Grizzlies sit third in the West, with the 22-19 Dallas Mavericks fifth.

The teams met twice in the space of four days in early-December. With Ja Morant and Luka Doncic both out, the Grizzlies won 97-90 in Dallas with Desmond Bane (29 pts, 9 reb) starring. Doncic (26 pts, 8 reb, 7 ast) returned to lead the Mavs to a 104-96 victory in Memphis, though Morant was still sidelined.

Memphis are on an 11-game winning streak and have made some real statements in the past week. After accounting for the Clippers (123-108) and Lakers (127-119) on consecutive nights in Los Angeles, the Grizzlies outlasted the NBA-leading Warriors and Timberwolves (yesterday) by identical 116-108 scorelines.

Ja Morant has moved up to the fifth line of MVP betting after a points decision in his duel with Steph Curry. The 22-year-old linchpin is averaging 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies’ depth has come to the fore with Dillon Brooks and Steven Adams out for recent games. Kiwi big man Adams is a chance to return today.

Dallas strung together their best run of an inconsistent season from New Year’s Eve, winning six straight. The heavyweight Nuggets, Warriors and Bulls were among their victims, with a Doncic triple-double (22 pts, 14 reb, 14 ast) spearheading the latter victory. The Mavs’ streak ended with a blowout 108-85 loss to the Knicks two days ago.

The likes of Maxi Kleber and Josh Green are emerging as key role-players with Kristaps Porzingis missing the Mavericks’ last six games.

The Grizzlies are 16-8 at home this season (14-10 against the line), winning five straight at FedEx Forum. The Mavs are 11-11 on the road (12-10 ATS) but have won three of their last four away games.

At 29-15, Memphis are the NBA’s second-best performed team against the start overall. The Grizzlies are 5-2 on a back-to-back.

The Morant-Doncic battle is worth the price of admission alone. The Mavs’ offensive armoury will test the Grizzlies, but the hosts’ blistering form is impossible to overlook at this generous price.
