NBA Tips & Preview – Lakers @ Mavericks

The daily preview takes it to the rim with NBA tips for the in-form LA Lakers’ road trip to Dallas.

NBA Tips – Los Angeles Lakers @ Dallas Mavericks

11:30 (AEDT), Thu 16th Dec @ American Airlines Center, Dallas

History: Played 186: Lakers 126 V Mavericks 60

Last meeting: April 24, 2021: Mavericks 108 d Lakers 93 at American Airlines Center

Final Thoughts: The seventh-placed Dallas Mavericks host the sixth-placed LA Lakers in a Western Conference duel, with both sides chasing three straight wins. Luka Doncic has been ruled out in a blow to the home side’s chances.

The 15-13 Lakers have found some elusive momentum, winning five of their last seven. LeBron James dropped 33 points in a 116-95 rout of the Thunder on Saturday (AEDT), before becoming the oldest player in NBA history with a triple-double (30 pts, 11 reb, 10 ast) in a 106-94 defeat of the Magic two days later.

Russell Westbrook and Talen Horton-Tucker both contributed 19 points against Orlando with Anthony Davis (knee) missing a second straight game. AD is set to return today; he and Lebron (abdomen) are listed as probable. Horton-Tucker, Malik Monk and Dwight Howard are out, however.

After winning nine of their 12, the Mavericks – with Doncic (ankle) sidelined – dominated the Thunder (103-84) away and the Hornets (120-96) at home on consecutive days. Kristaps Porzingis (24 pts, 13 reb) stepped up and Trey Burke (22 pts, 6 ast) and Tim Hardaway Jr (19 pts, 4 ast) had big games off the bench, combined for nine three-pointers, against Charlotte. The Mavs posted 70 points in the first half on the way to their third-highest score of the season.

Winning without Luka was a significant step for Dallas – they lost all four games during his mid-November absence with a knee complaint. Wille Cauley-Stein (personal reasons) will also be missing from the Mavericks line-up again.

The Lakers have won nine of their last 12 against the Mavericks. But the Mavericks won home clashes with the Lakers last season. Doncic averaged 24 points, 8.5 rebounds and 11.5 assists as Dallas prevailed 115-110 and 108-93 in the space of three days in April. But LeBron sat out both games; he and Davis combined for 50 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists when the Lakers blew the Mavericks out 138-115 in LA on Christmas Day.

The Mavericks are 7-6 at home this season, but just 4-9 against the line. The Lakers are just 5-6 on the road, overall and ATS.

Likely to be at full-strength, the improving Lakers shape as the clear value option as only a narrow head-to-head favourite.
