NBA Tips – Utah Jazz @ Golden State Warriors

12:30 (AEDT), Mon Jan 24th @ Chase Center, San Francisco

History: Played 209: Jazz 119 V Warriors 90

Last meeting: January 1, 2021: Warriors 123 d Jazz 116 at Vivint Arena

Final Thoughts: The second-placed Golden State Warriors host the fourth-placed Utah Jazz in a Western Conference blockbuster.

The heavyweights have met once so far this season. The Warriors got up 123-116 in Salt Lake City on New Year’s Day, despite Draymond Green’s absence. Steph Curry (28 pts, 6 reb, 9 ast), Andrew Wiggins (25 pts, 4 ast) and Otto Porter (20 pts, 7 reb, 8 ast) led the visitors’ charge. Rudy Gobert (20 pts, 19 reb) was a beast in a beaten team.

Both teams have endured their roughest patch of the season in the three weeks since, however.

The 33-13 Warriors have lost six of their last 10, with Green still on the sidelines. After Curry’s 39 points wasn’t enough to prevent an overtime loss to the Pacers (121-117), Golden State edged the Rockets 105-103 the following day. Curry (22 pts, 12 ast) hit a step-back buzzer-beater to sink Houston. Klay Thompson’s long-awaited return has been the big positive from January. He’s averaging 14.7 points and will be back on the floor after sitting out the Rockets clash.

Meanwhile, the 30-16 Jazz have won only two of their last eight. They bounced back from a five-point loss to the Rockets with a 111-101 defeat of the lowly Pistons two day ago with Gobert (24 pts, 14 reb) instrumental. Bojan Bogdanovic (23 pts, 6 reb) and Jordan Clarkson (20 pts, 3-of-5 from three-point range) also contributed strongly, with Donovan Mitchell currently out due to concussion.

Defensive Player of the Year candidate Gobert is not getting much back-up defensively from the rest of the Jazz line-up. The Warriors are struggling on defensive end with DPOTY favourite Green out – though at least that’s temporary.

Gobert is listed as questionable for the Jazz today, while Bogdanovic is probable. Hassan Whiteside is out.

Golden State are an outstanding 20-4 at home this season (15-8-1 against the start), winning four of their last five at Chase Center despite patchy recent form. Utah are 15-7 on the road (12-10 ATS), but they have lost four of their last five away.

With the Jazz battling injuries, I’ll back the Warriors to capitalise on that home-court advantage and cover.
