NBA Tips – Milwaukee Bucks @ Brooklyn Nets

11:30 (AEDT), Sat 8th Jan @ Barclays Center, Brooklyn

History: Played 202: Bucks 118 V Nets 84

Last meeting: October 19, 2021: Bucks 127 d Nets 104 at Fiserv Forum

Final Thoughts: Potential Eastern Conference Finals adversaries Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks lock horns for the second time this season.

The teams met on ring night in the early days of the 2021-22 campaign in Milwaukee. The reigning champion Bucks put an exclamation on their epic 4-3 Eastern Conference semis triumph from four months earlier with a 127-104 win. Giannis Antetokounmpo (32 pts, 14 reb, 7 ast) and Kevin Durant (32 pts, 11 reb, 4 ast) were both in outstanding touch.

It’s been far from smooth sailing for the 24-12 Nets and 25-15 Bucks, but they find themselves nestled second and third in the East standings.

Since spending a week on ice due to a COVID outbreak in their ranks, the Nets have gone 3-3. They lost three straight at home (their first back-to-back losses of the season) to the 76ers (110-102), Clippers (120-116) and Grizzlies (118-104) before snaring a 129-121 victory away to the Pacers two days ago. Durant (39 pts, 8 reb, 7 ast) was dominant, but Kyrie Irving’s 22 points in his first appearance of the season was the major talking point. James Harden added 18 points and 6 assists.

Irving will not play today, however, while Joe Harris (ankle) remains sidelined.

Battling injuries for much of their title defence to date, the Bucks put together an impressive six-game winning streak in late-December – including four victories by 17-plus points. But they were rolled 115-106 by the lowly Pistons earlier this week, then – with Antetokounmpo out – they went down 117-111 to the Raptors.

Giannis, who is averaging 27.9 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists, is listed as probable. With Jrue Holiday, Brook Lopez, Pat Connaughton, Grayson Allen and Donte DiVincenzo on the unavailable list, the Bucks need their marquee man on deck.

The Nets are just 10-9 at home (4-14-1 against the line) after losing their last four at Barclays Center. The Bucks are 12-8 on the road (11-9 ATS) and have won their last three away from Cream City.

Brooklyn, $1.52 favourites here, are also 0-7 in games against fellow top-eight teams this season. The Nets may be setting their sights on the top seed following Irving’s return and with KD in MVP-level form, but I have to take Giannis and the Bucks with the free points.
