This race contains a couple of enterprising, potentially emerging stayers. Namely, well the oddly named BUCHAN HOAKS and BUMRAH. Both have had 3 starts and both are coming off runs that showed they are learning their craft and can run on. Of the pair, I think I like Buchan Hoaks a little more. He drops back here a little in class from a couple of tough maidens. He was a good closing 5th last start over 1600m and that experience will have him fine-turned for this. I’m going to quinella the pair.
Tip: BUCHAN HOAKS
I have been studying form for many, many years and I think this may be the weakest TAB race I’ve seen. The field is made up of slow horses and perennial non-winners. I think after the claim that the former Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained MAHJONG ROSE might get the prize. Mainly because her pedigree is the best and she can run the trip. She was sent to the front in all of her 4 starts with Tulloch Lodge and petered out of a place each time. She was sent to Kylie Kennedy at Dubbo with the same result and now she is with Guntis Lukss. Now, she has placed a couple of times with Guntis as trainer and this is her home track, but the record books show he hasn’t trained a winner dating back to December 2011. So this could be a huge day on many levels.

Top trainer around these parts, Matthew Dunn, will saddle one runner here following the scratching of Terzo MILLENIO who did look the winner. It leaves the duties to the stablemate, OUR GIRL WANDA who is improving each start. This is her 4th run and she looks prime after coming home hard from well back to grab 4th this grade last start. Fit and ready now.
