We just love seeing restricted grade horses trial against open grade runners and more than hold their own. This happened last week with the top weight CORDONED. He has a terrific gate in 3 here and Louise Day will take 2kg off his back. That makes him in our eyes, a really good bet to win this first up. He ran 4th under restraint in that strong trial recently.
We know GENTLEMAN MAX has been out of form for a long time, and has a massive 62.5kg to carry here, two less than ideal attributes going into a race, but he does drop significantly in grade. And on top of that, he drops in distance too, yet another pair of significant attributes. He can fly home when on song and despite being beaten 10 lengths last start, it wasn’t a bad run. Each way show today from VICTORIAN CROWN.
Tip: GENTLEMAN MAX
There will be a good bit of speed on here and that should break the field up a bit. One of the ones vying for the lead from the get go should be the Victorian visitor WHAT A HOOT, who is in career best form. He sped to the top from gate rise at Ballarat in a very similar race over this trip last start, and just kept going to win by over a length. His form, apart from a Caulfield blemish, had been equally as impressive. The great inside draw helps him find the front and that could make the difference again. Big show here.
