- Flemington
- (2000)
- October 7, 2023
1. Romantic Warrior (11)
Champion from Hong Kong who has run faster on two occasions than all of his rivals. That counts for plenty. Once, ok great effort but to do it again and break two minutes for 2000m is world class. Is extremely consistent and has been backed to win a stack. Big chance.

Proven Winner
2. Gold Trip (18)
Super stayer. Won the Gr 1 Melbourne Cup and should have won under 62kg last start when resuming and a closing 4th to Young Werther. Has a good record 2nd up and loves this track. If it is damp under foot he will run a mighty race.

3. Smokin' Romans (17)
Is 3rd up and at his best can run an almighty race. Likes generally to be on speed so when he was a long, long way back last start it did seem odd. Performed poorly as a result. May surprise and improve a great deal now that he is fully wound up.

4. Francesco Guardi (7)
Could be the surprise packet here. Has loads of staying talent and is 3rd up in this after a couple of impressive WFA runs. Probably sits in the back half of the field but can run on and is very honest.

Ready to Fire
5. West Wind Blows (8)
Star stayer from England. Can run time and is extremely consistent. Last start was in August so is very fit. That day he was beaten a nostril over 2011m in a Gr 3 with 61.5kg. Loves this journey and is a proven Gr 1 galloper so must be a huge threat in this.

6. Emissary (5)
Caught the eye when coming from well back in 11th spot on the turn and 5th to Uncle Bryn in weaker race last start. Is improving this prep and will run on.

7. Osipenko (6)
Looks the pick of the locals. Chased home the local superstars Mr Brightside and Alligator Blood last start when a good 3rd in the Gr 1 Maybe Diva over a mile. Won this trip in the mud last prep. Is very fit now and looms large.

Ready to Fire
8. Uncle Bryn (1)
Stormed back to best form with a stunning win in the Gr 3 Naturalism over this trip last start. He was 3rd up that day. Now, that is a weaker race than this but he ran very fast time. Is fit and now back to best form. Chance.

9. Berkeley Square (14)
Handy type with talent but at WFA and Gr 1 level he may struggle late. Ran 4th in fast time to Uncle Bryn last start beaten 3 lengths. Is always genuine though.

10. Bank Maur (4)
Generally a strong contender even at this level but two runs from a spell have not been inspiring, latest when weakening 9th to Alligator Blood over 1800m. Not keen.

11. Soulcombe (2)
Seems to have come up in best form and may be a big player here. Resumed from spell with a very impressive 1700m Hcp win in weaker grade but stepped straight to Gr 1 level and was a good 4th to Alligator Blood in the 1800m Underwood. And is even better at this trip. Each way.

12. Duke De Sessa (12)
Star from France who was handy 10th when resuming to Mr Brightside last start in Gr 1 Memzies over unsuitable mile. Getting ready for the Cups but there is always a worry when horses keep getting scratched on race days and he has been withdrawn at his past two expected appearances.

13. Spanish Mission (10)
Just hasn’t really fired up since arriving in Australia 7 starts ago. Ran last to Mr Brightside last start over a mile beaten 9 lengths. Not keen.

14. El Bodegon (9)
Ran 3rd in Gr 1 Cox Plate on Aussie debut but has been absolutely thrashed in 6 starts since most of them when running last. Should be $201 on recent form. Does improve a great deal when it is wet though.

Good on Soft
15. Right You Are (16)
Outstanding stayer. Is 3rd up here at pet trip and will nearly win this despite the appearance of the international stars. Can run a very fast 2000m when right and last start made good ground late when 5th to Alligator Blood over 1800m in Gr 1 when it favoured leaders. Have in your numbers.

Ready to Fire
16. Lunar Flare (15)
Top staying mare getting ready for the Cups but doesn’t seem to have come up this prep.

17. El Patroness (Em1) (3)
Could sneak a place here at big odds. Has form at this level and last start when resuming over 1400m ran a cracking race when 3rd to the great Amelia’s Jewel. Watch market moves.

Good on Soft
18. Goldman (Em2) (13)
Is fascinating. He may well roll forward if he gets a run here and take the front. Now that he is fully fit he can run along at very fast sectionals which will get a lot of these in pain a long way from home. Is the dark horse.
