Gr 2 – The Ingham Preview

Ric Chapman looks at every runner in this year's The Ingham. He previews all their chances and finds the Top 4 home.

1. Private Eye (14)

Best Bet
J: N Rawiller T: J Pride

Old boy who bounced back to form last start in a similar race at Rosehill with this weight over 1500m. Was finally ridden much closer that day and careered away. This is probably a length or so harder but on his day he trounces these and he did win last start by 3 lengths. Big danger.

2. Gringotts (7)

J: T Berry T: C Maher

Is being hailed the next Gr 1 star after a string of ultra-impressive efforts this prep. Last start carried 60kg yet beat off a similar field easily to claim the $1m The Gong at Kembla over this trip. Drew wide that day so ran to the lead early and stayed there. Had the previous start won in similar style, the $3m Big Dance. Bound to benefit greatly from this draw and looms large.

3. Port Lockroy (3)

J: T Schiller T: A Neasham & R Archibald

A stallion whose last start was at this trip and we saw his value increase tenfold, as he won gamely in the Gr 1 Railway in Perth. Has drawn to get the charmed run of the race in about 4th spot and is in sparkling form. Must be strongly considered.

Always a threat in any race. Carried 59kg to comfortably win the Ladies Day over 1500m at stakes level then back to unsuitable 1300m when a strong 5th to Briasa in the $1m The Hunter. Better suited this trip and probably tucks in with cover in about 8th spot before finishing hard.

Is at the peak of his powers and meets Private Eye 2kg better for last start loss by 4 lengths to him. Hate that he’s drawn so wide too. With luck he is weighted to sneak a place but getting that luck will be tough.

Very smart and he proved that last start at Caulfield over 1800m when, after a brilliant ride, he stormed home at the rate of knots to claim the Gr 3 Eclipse. Tough ask from this gate but he’s flying and can finish hard.

Yet to win at this trip but looks one of the hardest to beat in this. Is super fit and did sit 3-wide without cover the whole way when a strong finishing 5th to Gringotts in the $1m The Gong this trip. Was beaten 4.7 lengths that day but meets the winner 3kg better and is drawn to get a much sweeter run this time. Can handle wet and looms large.

8. Lion's Roar (18)

After winning the Wyong Cup over 2100m, he was thrashed in the $5m King Charles, thrashed in the $3m Big Dance behind Gringotts and then was beaten 6 lengths by Gringotts again in The Gong. Does meet Gringotts 7kg better for losing to him by 6 lengths in the Big Dance but just isn’t racing well enough. As a footnote, has run in this race twice already and been placed both times!

Prolific placegetter who rattled home into 3rd behind Gringotts last start at Kembla in the 1600m The Gong. Had the perfect run all the way and was beaten 2.3lengths. Meets the winner here 1.5kg better but can he turn the tables? Will again receive a great run this gate.

Top class mare who likes to get to the outside. Couldn’t last start when she made her run between runners and 7th in The Gong behind Gringotts. Meets him 2kg better but will be last on settling from this horror draw. Has won over a mile here at stakes level and can finish hard.

Will be big odds and from this gate he may have to sprint hard early. Now, if he finds the fence and can settle, with this lightweight he may take a bit of running down. However, it does look as if he will have to work hard from this draw and as such I'm not keen.

Meets Gringotts only .5kg better after getting out at the 250m and charging late when 2nd to him in the Gong. Is the model of consistency and although drawn poorly I see him finding cover probably a little better than midfield. If he runs on again here he’s a player.

The barrier is a burden but he is in sparkling form and must be considered. Ran super fast time to win over a mile under a crushing 62kg last start at Kembla. This is harder but the time was outstanding. Drops 9kg in this. Had been beaten a nose start prior over a mile at Randwick. Up in grade but must be considered.

May be a run short for this but there is no doubt that if he is fit enough he can run with them. Won the Litte Dance this trip last year in good time with 59kg. Carries nothing here but is 2nd up. This is the dark horse. Can run time and did so when resuming under 62kg over 1400m in aa low-key BM 78. Backed it up on a heavy track with a runaway win over 1400m in BM 94. This is harder and has drawn wide which isn’t a worry as he will lead with this lightweight. Has won at 1500m and placed at 1800m so being 3rd up he will take some catching.
