Gr 2 – Hill Stakes

Our Gr 1 man Ric Chapman has looked over this big $2m Hill Stakes race. He previews every runner and finds the top 4 home.

1. Pericles (4)

J: Nash Rawiller T: James Cummings

Is in peek form and being 4th up after some colossal runs this time in makes him a major, major threat. Drawn to get the run of the race too. Can sit just behind the pace and accelerate when needed. Does look one of the very hardest to beat.

2. Royal Patronage (10)

J: Tim Clark T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Missed the kick by over a length and was very unlucky not to have won the 7 stakes then sat on speed and kept fighting to the wire when a game 3rd last week in the Gr 1 Epsom over a mile beaten just 2 lengths by Ceowulf. Yet to win at this trip but is super fit and looks the class here. Big danger.

3. Attrition (11)

J: Beau Mertens T: Mitch Freedman

Another one yet to win at this trip but is fit now after 3 tough runs this prep. Chased home the super fast speed set by Pride Of Jenni last start when 4th in the Gr 2 Feehan over a mile. Was making ground late. This is easier and could figure in the finish.

4. Kovalica (2)

Looks to me to be the one to beat. Was held up at the 200m and had to surge late failing to claim Royal Patronage by half a head to grab 3rd in the Epsom. It was a blanket finish for the minor placing and he certainly was the unlucky runner. Is 3rd up here, on the quick back-up and has won up to 2400m. Is trained here and drawn perfectly. I’ll be getting on in a big way.

5. Nonconformist (5)

J: Harry Coffey T: Grahame Begg

Interesting runner. Has won several Group races at this trip and has been placed at Gr 1 over this journey and in the 2400m Caulfield Cup. Add to that, his run last start when resuming behind Buckaroo over a mile was outstanding when 3rd suggests he has strong claims in this. A slight counter-balance is that he hasn’t won a race for 19 months. Place.

6. Golden Path (7)

J: Chad Schofield T: Mick Price & Michael Kent

Is up in grade here but he is flying at present and big note – if it rains he is a massive threat. Won 3 on the bounce including the 2000m McKell Cup in the mud by a big space before a great 3rd in the strong Gr 3 Kingston Town behind Eliyass. Ceolwulf was 2nd  in that race. Must be considered.

7. New Endeavour (9)

J: Adam Hyeronimus T: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott

Very reliable Gr 3 type runner who is 3rd up here and is ready to run a bottler. Fought on well when 3rd in easier Gr 2 Shannon Stakes over 1500m last start. Has not won at this trip but did place in Gr 1 over 2000m last winter. Place show.

On the quick back-up from last week’s Gr 1 Epsom where he ran an honest, even race finishing 10th of 20. Yet to win this trip and others rate higher at WFA.

Wouldn’t win this with a headstart. Saying that does love it when wet.

In and out type. Looked a million bucks easily winning the 2400m City Tatts Cup last month then was first horse beaten when they turned in theNewcastle Cup last start. Not keen.

Talented but in and out type of mare. Finished hard to miss by a nostril in the Gr 2 Clemsford over a mile last month by the very smart buckaroo then not sighted when a plodding 7th to Fangirl last start in the 7 Stakes. is trained here and can show up but bet cautiously.
