Gr 1 – All-Star Mile

Small field makes it a little disappointing, but an even one so tactics play a role in the All-Star Mile this year. Ric Chapman unpacks the race.

1. Mr Brightside (5)

J: C Williams T: B, W & J Hayes

The powers that be just keep gifting this grand old champion event after event for him to build his legacy upon. He’s back in great shape, tremendous Gr 1 win last start over 1400m in good time from Tom Kitten, and everything points to him being 2nd in the run travelling sweetly and looking hard to catch again. Is 3rd up and ready for the race of his life.

Last start’s run, said, ‘back me in the big one’. And this is the ‘big one’. He was cluttered up behind runners, then when out, far too late, he absolutely sprouted wings and failed to catch Mr Brightside by a head. He wins if the race is 1401m. Last prep, he ran on over 1400m, then, like here, stepped up to a mile next start and was 2nd in the Gr 1 Epsom in fast time. If there is any worthwhile pace in the race early, he will chime in with a powerful finishing burst. Big, big danger.

3. Light Infantry Man (6)

J: E Brown T: C Maher

Last start, when resuming, he got back but did scoot home quite well late for 6th to Mr Brightside and Tom Kitten in the Gr 1 Futurity. He is 2nd up here and has won 2nd up before, and, he is unbeaten at this track. Is a 1800m Gr 1 winner and he may well be quite competitive here.

4. Another Wil (1)

J: J Melham T: C Maher

Is he the best horse in the country? Certainly has a couple of challengers, and two are in this, but the way he just ran down Mr Brightside last start when fresh over 1400m was awesome. He’s raced at this track twice and won both times. He’s a Gr 1 winner and he loves Jamie Melham when she rides him. Is also unbeaten in 3 attempts while 2nd up and yep, he’s 2nd up here. Drawn the fence. Everything points to a win here.

Good handicapper but will get absolutely smashed in this. Should run last.

6. Rise At Dawn (2)

J: M Zahra T: B, W & J Hayes

Extremely good handicapper and the one who holds the keys to this race as he is the pacemaker. Up on speed in all of his last 5 starts, winning 4 of them and beaten a nostril in the other. Should get run over late by a few of these, but if he sets a solid tempo that makes this a great race.

7. Atishu (7)

Is she the forgotten horse here? Look at her stats. Has won 4 times at this track including at Gr 1 level. Has won 4 times at this distance including at Gr 1 level. Has won 3 times when 2nd up, and she is 2nd up here and ran faster time over 1400m than all her rivals in their respective last start runs when beaten 3 lengths behind Fangirl. Will get back but can sprout wings late.
