Group 1 racing heads to the West this weekend, with the running of the time-honoured Group 1 Railway Stakes on Saturday at Ascot. Star Western Australian hoop William Pike, fresh from five winners last Saturday will ride REGAL POWER in the Railway. Racing writer Justin Devine takes a look at the Wizard’s book of rides for and identifies the best.
The Wizard ❤️ The Big Occasion
With wins on GALAXY STAR (Railway Stakes), ARCADIA QUEEN (Kingston Town Classic) and a second on ENTICING STAR (Winterbottom Stakes) Willy Pike came tantalisingly close to winning all three Group 1 races in last year’s Perth Racing Carnival. All horses carried the colours of prolific owner Bob Peters and Pike has once again placed his faith in the cerise and white silks this year in the big races.
Last Saturday, the jockey known as “the wizard” got his eye in for the feature season, riding five winners at Ascot. It was a nice tune-up for the big races over the next few weeks.
Great Book of Rides 📕
Trying to pick out Pike’s best ride is like choosing between your children! He has rides in eight of the nine races and ALL are winning chances.
Has won two this prep and has been freshened since a last start third over same track and distance. Expect the 4yo mare to feature in the finish.
Finished strongly on debut to win under the urgings of the Wizard and he sticks with her. If she runs to her debut win, she can make it two on the trot.
Pike and MASSIMO are looking to make it a hattrick of wins after successive Ascot wins. Gets in beautifully with the 3kg weight drop.
Never looked likely when resuming after nearly a year off the scene in the Group 2 Steere Stakes. Has won 7 from 14 and sharp improvement is expected on Saturday.
Another galloper with a fantastic record (19:8-3-1) who will ready to fire third up. Monitor betting markets.
R9 – 9. Black Sabbath @ $4
Will get an economical run from the gate and has a nice pull in the weights over his main rivals. “Back Pike in the last” ?

Group 1 Railway Stakes
Pike was able to weave GALAXY STAR through the field from a near-impossible position to win last year’s Railway Stakes (below). From gate 2 last year, the Wizard found himself buried back in the field. This year he has a different challenge. His ride, REGAL POWER ($8)has drawn gate 15 out of 16. Expect the wizard to settle well back in the field and look to close late in the Peter’s colours. Last year’s WA Derby winner will only need some early cover to feature in the finish. Leave him out at your own peril.

The Group 2 W.A Guineas is the other feature race on the card. Pike will once again don the Peter’s colours aboard SUPERSTORM ($4.2). The beautifully bred 3yo was an impressive winner at Ascot last start, finishing strongly to win over the 1400 metres. He looks like he will eat up the 1600 metres on Saturday and is the horse to beat. The fact that Pike has chosen to partner him, instead of stablemates BOGART and SPECIAL CHOICE is a nice lead. Bob Peters has stated that SUPERSTORM is the best of his current crop of 3yos.
