I think this is a match in two between the now locally trained JAPINGKA and VINAIGRETTE. Both fillies have placed at their past run in this grade, the former at this track. But I like the latter. Vinaigrette has been on a slow but obvious improvement curve for the past 6 months. She has actually placed at her past four starts at this level including once at the provincials. Everything suggests they fight this out but I think Vinaigrette gets the major prize.
This race fascinates me. I hope CAMP RIFLE wins. He was purchased a couple of weeks back from the Godolphin dispersal draft of horses and is now trained by Tony Newing at Gosford. Right there I’m fascinated. New trainers tend to bring horses on for their first start and this is the first run, barring a trial which he won last week, for Newing and the new owners. The sport needs cast-offs to return the faith their new owners place in them. And I think he can improve on his poor recent city and provincial form. It worked for his main rival HYPERION STAR who has won twice since he was transferred from Victoria to be trained up north of NSW at this track. They are my quinella.
Tip: CAMP RIFLE
I am a little concerned that TOMBOLO has drawn so wide and with an apprentice on that might mean she is forced deep all the way. But, there appears a good deal of pace so likely she drifts back through the pack to midfield and at that point she should find a spot, probably one off with cover. If so she is a player here. She has finishing power at this level and with the 2kg claim she is in well at the weights. Dubbo has a very long straight which should suit. Today she is 4th up so now looks her time.
