Form student, RIC CHAPMAN, previews Day 1 of  Scone’s big annual two-day carnival, with horse racing tips and analysis for all eight races on the card. Good luck, punters!

Rail Position: True, entire circuit

Track Condition: Soft 5

ICE SHELF begins his racing career here and it may be a good beginning at that. Showed a lot of natural ability in a recent trial. Is by Redoute’s Choice. Watch betting moves. KING’S CHAMP is only a 2YO but does seem to have talent. Finished hard to just miss catching Bengalla Bay last start, and that horse has since come out and won an open age Class 1. MARGIE BEE hasn’t drawn very well but did show ability when finishing well for 2nd this grade last start while first up. Respect.

It’s just so hard to go past COS I’M GOOD. He has run 2nd at last 3 starts, once here when beaten a nose, then at Tamworth when beaten half a length and finally last start when again a half-length back over 1400m. Looks in well here. ENGLAND has the top jock Jay Mac on top and has been nominated in various races of late. That points to him being very ready. CHATERESSE is by Albrecht and she has talent indicated by the aggressive way she led from barrier rise this grade last start and failed by a neck over 1300m. All of them are strongly fancied in this.

We saw Kiamichi by new season stallion Sidestep lead all the way in the Gr 1 Golden Slipper and we may very well see the same thing happen here with Sidestep’s daughter LONGBOTTOM. She seems bulletproof as a young racehorse. She has a lot of finishing power and is unbeaten in 2 starts, latest in town at Eagle Farm on a Saturday. Another one by Sidestep, TANGO STEPZ, ran a cracking 3rd in a very similar race last start at just her 2nd race start. Will appreciate the great draw and SUKWHINDER is a last start, on debut all-the-way-winner at Coffs Harbour recently. Good race.

OCCUPY was a solid 6th when resuming from lengthy spell last start. It was his Aussie debut having run in staying events in Europe prior. Gets a welcome 2kg claim here and might surprise these. POP GIRL is very fit and just as honest. Always bobs up in the major money at this level. AUSTRIA hit the line well when resuming this grade and 4th recently. Bound to be storming home. Place.

PHAISTOS has done all his racing in Victoria and comes here, first up from a 4 months spell, with a mdn win and a BM 64 placing. That reads well going into this. Has also trialled recently. POWER LIFT might be pretty handy. Is racing for 2nd time here after a strong, and well supported, provincial mdn win on debut. Will be on pace all the way.  FOXPACK resumes here. When last in work finished campaign with an impressive mdn win so is a chance.

NICCO LAD’s last win was back in Oct last year but his 3 subsequent runs have all been placings in this grade or better. Hit line hard for 3rd last start in better company and should strip fitter here. WATCHDOG is a highly consistent galloper at this level and did place first up. Drawn well and was good first up.

TAKE IT INTERN is a good galloper this trip and doesn’t have to travel all that far for his day out at the races. Flashed home in strong BM 100 when resuming last start to just fail. Fitter now and with lightweight, looms large.  FIERCE IMPACT  is ready to fire up. Has loads of finishing talent and is 3rd up from a spell over a trip that really suits. Only beaten 2 lengths by the brilliant Pierata at WFA last start! Big danger while GOLDSTREAM won’t know himself with this tiny weight. He can run on too and suited to this journey.

Wow, a race with 8 million chances. So hard to find the winner – if you do, well done. BEAUTY BEST has placed at past 2 this grade so is up to this and drawn comfortably here. ALL BUT GONE will be big odds but can hit the wire hard and is 3rd up now. GO THE GANTRY and VALREE are both capable of winning but will get back because of their bad draws. Absolute lottery.
