T: Kris Leess / J: Hugh Bowman (56.5kg)
What a superb run last start to plough through the mud, make a long sustained run in the process and fight off some of the best gallopers in the land to win the $5million All-Star Mile. He carried 59kg that day and was tremendously brave. Meets this field 3rd up so has fitness on his side. Looks extremely hard to beat here as he is unbeaten at this trip from two runs.
T: James Cummings / J: James McDonald (56kg)
Tough customer. His chances enhance considerably if the expected rain later in this week comes. He is 3rd up here and should have won the Gr 1 George Ryder over 1500m last start when held up as they straightened. Rocketed home late to just miss. If the track is damp he will loom large over the rise and be very hard to beat. He loves this track and runs well this trip.
T: Bjorn Baker /J: Josh Parr (56kg)
Will go hard from the word go and from this gate probably tries to lead. Is a Gr 1 winner and has a great record at this journey. Is 3rd up and should prove a fly in the ointment all the way even if he allows Yao Dash to cross and lead him.
T: Chris Waller / J: Sam Clipperton (54kg)
What a good miler on his day. Looked back to his best winning the 1600m Blamey in Melb at Gr 2 level, then beaten 4 lengths when a good 6th in the All-Star Mile. Was pretty plain last start when weakening 6th to Think It Over in the Gr 1 George Ryder. Does go well this track though.
T: Annabel Neasham / J: Tommy Berry (54kg)
Former French galloper with Gr 1 form but in three Aussie starts to date he has looked plain. Resumes here and may find it too steep.
T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / J: Tim Clark (53.5kg)
If the predicted rain comes and the track is wet her chances improve. Is 3rd up here. Another who likes to go hard but she doesn’t have to lead to be effective. This is her home track and she has a rough knock out hope.
T: Kris Lees /J: Jason Collett (53.5kg)
Good galloper. Is actually better than many think. Terrific finishing burst to win the 1400m Gr 3 Newcastle Newmarket then less than 2 lengths behind Think It Over in the Gr 1 George Ryder last start. Is very fit and has a good record at this journey.
T: Annabel Neasham /J; Regan Bayliss (53.5kg)
Is a legitimate Group horse from England. He has raced pretty well in some of Europe’s biggest gr 1 races and was only beaten 4 lengths in the big Hong Kong Mile – two years ago. This is a big ask first up not just in Australia but from racing from a long time. has trialled well though.
T: Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman /J: Kerrin McEvoy (53kg)
Super talented 3YO from New Zealand. Looked awesome when on Aussie debut he thrashed a good field of his contemporaries to claim the Gr 2 Hobartville over 1400m, then just didn’t look fresh when a plodding 6th in Gr 1 Randwick Guineas this trip. Has had a month off to pick himself back up.
T: James Cummings /J: Jamie Kah (53kg)
Very smart miler who is coming good at exactly the right time. Is 3rd up here after a good 3rd in the 1400m Newcastle Newmarket then a real eye-opening 4th to Think It Over in the Gr 1 Ryder over 1500m. Doesn’t win often but has no weight here and is now supremely fit. Big show.
T: Leon McDonald & Andrew Gluyas /J: Jason Holder (53kg)
Good galloper who has the perfect draw and is 3rd up but isn’t racing well enough to trouble these. Beaten nearly 4 lengths behind Think It Over last start.
T: Kerry Parker / Glen Boss (52.5kg)
Nice tough galloper who seems to be improving every start. Is the form horse leading into this race and is also the best weighted. Carried 59kg to win the Gr 1 George Ryder beating many of these and meets them all pretty much on better terms for beating them. His gate is a worry but he is so fit and versatile that he can go forward looking for a spot or dropping back. Is so genuine and rates highly.
T: Chris Waller / J: Craig Williams (52.5kg)
Good, honest mare who comes into this very well at the weights. But last start she was disappointing behind Think It Over. Had a nice run behind the speed, tried to go wide looking for good ground but only plodded home for 8th. Was runner-up in the Gr 1 Epsom earlier this year but place show in this.
T: James Cummings /J: Rachel King (52.5kg)
This is the best weighted horse in the race. He will no doubt go hard from this alley and find a spot, probably one off in about 4th spot. He is very fit and has proven he can run time this trip. Carried 58kg here this trip in December and ran 1:33:52. Today he carries just 52.5kg. If he gets a clear run he can win this. Will be flashing home.
T: Team Snowden /J: Andrew Adkins (52kg)
What a super steady, consistent galloper who has drawn well enough for this. Is in super form with a great win over the smart subsequent Gr 1 winner Think It Over. Is trained here and weighted to be right in this finish.
T: Team Hawkes / J: James Innes (52kg)
Is a good strong finishing galloper who always looks well placed in these big handicaps. Rattled home when 3rd to I Am Superman in the Gr 2 Ajax over 1500m, then ran on well last week when 4th to Yao Dash. Does hit the line hard on his day and is ridden by the man who won this race last year.
T: Wendy Roche / Michael Poy (51kg)
Carried 51.5kg and came from 19th on the bend to win this race last year from Star Of The Seas. It was an amazing finishing burst on a wet track. In several starts since, she hasn’t done a thing. Although, last start’s 7th with 57kg behind Verry Elleegant was a good trial for this. Does love this track.
T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / J: Michael Dee (50.5kg)
Is the dark horse. Did lead all the way on a leader biased track last weekend to win the Gr 3 Prelude and does drop 2.5kg here. Pressure will be on all the way here as he will have company in the lead. Is trained here though which helps.
T: Annabel Neasham /j: Robbie Dolan (49.5kg)
Should have won the Gr 1 Randwick Guineas over this trip with 56.5kg. He ran 2nd and clocked 1:33:81. Now, that is very fast and good enough to win this. He came out and showed his credentials when he stormed home from near last on the bend to win the Gr 1 Rosehill Guineas. It is a tried and tested formula to come back 400m next start for a race like this and he carries no weight. So can do it.
T: Team Freedman / J: Dean Yendall (49.5kg)
Good filly who ploughed through the mud to win Gr 1 Surround Stakes against her age group then thrashed in the Coolmore Classic. Likes it wet.
T: Brad Widdup /J: Jay Ford (50.5kg)
This mare is definitely coming into this race in form and peaking. Gets back and runs on. Will be suited by the hectic pace and carries no weight. Is a knock out hope.
T: Chris Waller / J: – (49.5kg)
Lightly raced 3YO with a lot of talent who is in well at the weights but the depth of this opposition will test him.
