T: James Cummings / J: Hugh Bowman (59kg)
What a courageous galloper. What a horse to bet on. Just gets back and you know that he will get clear and get home hard. Finished like a train when 5th in unsuitable Gr 1 race when resuming. Fitter now and will be charging again.
T: Pat Webster/ J: Tommy Berry (59kg)
Is he still Australia’s best miler? We will see soon enough. His trainer believes the old boy is running as good as he ever has. If that’s true he can win this. He adores this track and always runs particularly well. Difficult alley here. He may have to drive forward and find a spot but he has led Group races and won so can do it. Big player.
T: Jamie Richards / J: Opie Bosson (59kg)
He is a star in New Zealand and at recent carnivals has been here as well. Is a Gr 1 Cox Plate placegetter and his win when resuming in NZ last start was breathtakingly good. Where he gets to early from this gate is difficult to say. But if he gets cover he will be right in this finish. Big show.
Outstanding galloper this trip on his day. And is the one they all have to catch here. He no doubt charges to the lead and if left alone, will win the race. Can run astonishing time this trip. When he last raced this journey, he thrashed Te Akau Shark in 1.21.69. That would just about win this if he’s in that shape again. Was runner up to the great Alizee last start when resuming. Has won 5 races at this track.
T: Matt Smith / J: Brenton Avdulla (59kg)
This is one of the best horses in the land and certainly the most improved. Last campaign he won back to back Gr 1 races over 1600m. And when resuming this time up he finished like a train to just miss catching star 3YO Alabama Express at Gr 1 this trip. Won a barrier trial last week and will be flashing home here.
T: Kris Lees / J: Kerrin McEvoy (59kg)
Is a multiple Group winner in Europe and is a Gr 1 winner in Germany. Only start in Australia he was thrashed in the Cox Plate. Likely needs it further.
T: Anthony Freedman / J: Ben Melham (59kg)
Is outstanding. Has the ability to be the best middle-distance horse in the land. Won a recent barrier trial handsomely and has transferred stables. Now with Anthony Freedman. May find this too short but watch him hit the line.
T: Chris Waller / J: Josh Parr (59kg)
Very good stayer on his day and wasn’t far away behind Alizee when resuming last start. Gr 1 level may be too high at this trip.
T: Chris Waller / J: Jason Collett (57kg)
This bloke is a much better racehorse than a lot of people think. Gets back but runs home hard and was a fast finishing 6th to Alizee in Gr 2 last start this trip when resuming. Place show.
T: Gwenda Markwell / J: Sam Clipperton (59kg)
This is a good on pace stayer but he has been badly placed at his past few runs. Is a Gr 1 winner but he just isn’t up to that level these days, especially in these short races.
T: Team Snowden / J: – (59kg)
This bloke should get run over here but he is a real talent at staying. In fact, I’ve backed him to win the Melbourne Cup already this year. I see him dropping to last early and picking off a couple of these late. His day will come.
T: Chris Waller / J: Glyn Schofield (58.5kg)
Much hyped German stayer now here with Chris Waller. His form says he is a Melbourne Cup horse and not a Chipping Norton horse. So let’s look for him in 2000m or further races.
T: Chris Waller / J: James McDonald (57kg)
An outstanding mare who is unpredictably brilliant. That means she can get back, reef her head off and do little, or she can sit back, settle and come with a world-class paralyzing sprint. Did that to win at Gr 2 level this trip last prep. Loves it damp. Is 2nd up here after a fine and fast-finishing 4th to Alizee last start.
T: Chris Waller / J: Glen Boss (57kg)
Is an interesting galloper. Prefers it a bit longer. But she did make up considerable ground when resuming behind Alizee last start when 5th. Fitter now.
