Form analyst, RIC CHAPMAN, looks at Thursday’s Flemington meeting, with horse racing tips and analysis for all 9 races on the card, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks. Good luck, punters!

Track Condition: Good 4

Rail Position: Out 6m, entire circuit

A tough opening to a big day. I BOOGI has drawn well and has run himself into form. carried a big weight when 3rd last start, with SAVAHEAT the winner. Does meet that horse 3kg better. Both are strong chances here. As is IMPI who keeps getting better and better. Only had 4 starts but has won 3 of them and this trip suits.

From the top: JERLE chased home a subsequent failure in Mildred on debut. Ran honestly and probably comes on a bit from that. Bush galloper EASTERN WIND ran 5th on debut in Sydney in a tough race. This may be easier and he should strip fitter. ARCTIC ICE ran an unbelievable final 250m on debut when 3rd in a tough 2YO. Fitter now and this track will suit. Watch the market.

PLATINUM ANGEL should like this. Drawn awkwardly but Damien Oliver rides so probably finds a spot and should, at 3rd start up this time in, come hard late. MR TIPLA is a quality galloper this company when on song and was sound 6th when resuming. Presumably is fitter now. SIR SIMON is yet another high-flying Tasmanian winning 4 of past 5 starts. Respect all that has come before him.

SO YOU SWING is very honest and is in form. Those two attributes are paramount on city tracks. Big test for unbeaten mare WEST WIND. She’s won 3 from 3 in the bush being on pace all way and grinding home. Is she a winner or just a bush horse beater? SOVEREIGN AWARD is lightly raced but seems immensely gifted. Led all way to win easily at Ballarat then run down by a stakes horse last start. Suited here although will get taken on for the lead early which may worry. Can take a sit which will be prudent.

Good quality field. BALL OF MUSCLE is a Gr 1 winner and is the class of the field. Terrific 2nd placing last start in a much stronger race. Does have to give them all weight but loves this trip. PLAGUE STONE gets back and runs on. If on song he can flash late but was beaten 2nd up last campaign and is 2nd up here. His stablemates BADAJOZ and SOOTHING get home hard and should be factors here too.

This looks a race a lot of people are interested in. The reason: HARBOUR VIEW. He is unbeaten in 5 starts and looks to have a mortgage on this. He sits just off the speed and just explodes. Seems very exciting. O’TAUTO is very smart and reliable and chased home Harbour View last start when 2nd. Drawn poorly but is 2nd up and trip suits. STARSPANGLED RODEO has gears and is honest. Two starts this time up have been full of merit running 2nd each time with eye-catching efforts.

This Sydney 3YO PANCHO looks promising. He’s had a few starts now so is used to the system and is fit. Can run on very strongly and this trip and track look ideal. OSCAR BOY looks to have a solid future. Three runs to date have been excellent in this company and should be right in this. RUSSIAN CAMELOT won his maiden on debut. And looked a million dollars doing it. Stormed home from last of 12 and won running away. Is gifted. Up in class here but rates highly and is with the Melb Cup-winning trainer!

Very nice Oaks field. talent is evenly distributed among 5 runners. They are MIAMI BOUND who has beaten the best of these before and is in form, MOONLIGHT MAID who is extremely fit and has a win over Miami Bound on her CV, GAMAY who has genuine, outstanding finishing power and the top European jock to boot, VEGAS JEWEL who has drawn badly but has form around all the stars and finally the Sydney filly AMAZING PEACE who can stay all day but form is against weaker types. Box them all up.

Tip: 1. MOONLIGHT MAID, 2. Miami Bound, 3. Gamay, 4. Amazing Peace

TENLEY probably wins the award for most disappointing 3YO in the land. As a juvenile, she won a stakes race and looked like a genuine superstar. She needs everything to go her way, but when she wants to, she can run home like a hurricane. This track may get that response from her. CALIFORNIA ZIMBOL is making a case to be classified as best 3YO filly in the land. And if she wins this, which she is a very good chance to do, she can claim that crown. Has paralyzing finishing speed and thrashed subsequent Gr 1 winner Loving Gaby when leading all the way last start over 1200m. TARAAYEF is an honest filly with top ability this grade. In form too.
