Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
It was a mixed week last week with all three 😍 victorious! Unfortunately all three ❎ also saluted 😮. This week PLAGUE STONE and DEPRIVE should continue the Blue Army’s good run and Matthew Smith has placed TONSOR well at Flemington😍. KOLDING will find the step up in class and wide gate too much in the Queensland Guineas, while WESTERN PRIDE at Belmont and ILLUMICON at Morphettville look under the odds.
Good Luck Punters. 😉
Eagle Farm R1 -1. Plague Stone @ $2.15😍
Has been absolutely airborne this prep, with 2 wins and a second behind the unbeaten ZOUSTYLE . Finished strongly last start to win the Lightning and the step up to 1200 metres looks ideal. Ticks all the boxes.

Flemington R3 – 2. Tonsor @ $2.90😍
The Matthew Smith trained 5yo put together a hat trick of wins before failing over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm last start. Drops back to 1000 metres this week and has trialled well in preparation for this assignment. I’m sticking with him.
With 5 wins from 8 starts the Godolphin owned gelding is building a formidable record. Scratched from Eagle Farm to race at Randwick, and gets in beautifully at the barrier draw and weight. Looks a group horse, and if he can reproduce his recent form he wins.
Eagle Farm R5 – 5. Kolding @ $2.50 ❎
KOLDING has taken all before him of late, winning his last three. Steps up to Listed company here, and has drawn off the track. I’m happy to risk him at the price. Pass.
BET NOW QUEENSLAND GUINEAS HERE:
One of the short-priced favourites to be partnered by William “the wizard” Pike. From the wide gate, the unbeaten filly will sit back in the run before sweeping home late, as is the norm for Pike’s rides. It will be heart in your mouth stuff as she dives late. I think WESTERN PRIDE will have too much to do and others look better value.
The Tony McEvoy trained 4yo looks primed for a big run after a solid second last start. However, ILLUMICON has gone seven runs between wins and has only won 2 from 12 career starts. From the wide draw, he runs the risk of being posted outside the leader, or even worse three wide. The $2.25 looks under the odds this weekend based on his record. I’m looking elsewhere.
