Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
ALFA ORO showed great fighting qualities to win last start and a repeat will be enough for him to account for his rivals, while HARBOUR VIEWS looks bound for the Spring carnival. They both will be hard to beat at Caulfield. In the West, BRIGHT DIAMOND should have no problems accounting for her rivals with the Wizard aboard at Belmont😍 . KORDIA is the most interesting runner of the day at Rosehill after a year off the scene, and while he looks under the odds, I expect him to improve going forward. SOXAGON and SCALLOPINI are sure to have plenty of support at Doomben, but I am happy to be betting around them❎ .
Good Luck Punters!
Caulfield R7 – 9. Alfa Oro @ $2.6 😍
ALFA ORO is building a formidable record, with four wins and two seconds from six runs. The 4yo showed plenty of fight to win at Flemington last start (below) despite finding the lead earlier than he would have liked. Expect him to box seat and get the prize again. I’m on.
So, so tough was Alfa Oro. pic.twitter.com/kACYt7yUJX

Caulfield R8 – 4. Harbour Views @ $2.1 😍
Broke through for a dominant win at the Valley last start (below) after a run of minor placings. With six wins from nine runs, HARBOUR VIEWS is one of the biggest “spruik” horses in the country with huge things expected going forward. Can he go on with the job now? He looked great last time and I think he will be too good again.
Can Harbour Views go back-to-back this Saturday at Caulfield? pic.twitter.com/AqNgsgEuPO

Belmont R4 – 5. Bright Diamond @ $1.95 😍
The 3yo filly was a fast-finishing second last time, after impressing with wins at her first two runs. The step up to 1400m looks ideal and Willy Pike rides in the Bob Peter’s colours. BRIGHT DIAMOND might be a star. She ticks all the boxes here.
Rosehill R9 – 5. Kordia @ $3.4 ❎
The Godolphin prepared KORDIA returns after a year off the scene and has trialled well in preparation for his first-up run. He looked more than capable when winning twice as a 2yo, including a Listed win in last year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival. However, he has not raced on rain-affected going and is first up after a long layoff. He may come out and be too good for his rivals, BUT, the $3.4 looks under the odds for mine. Pass.
Doomben R6 – 6. Soxagon @ $2.6 ❎
SOXAGON has two wins and a second this preparation and is once again the one to beat. Having said that, he was run down in the shadows of the post last start, when given every possible chance by Brad Stewart in the run. This race has a bit more depth and his main danger THY KINGDOM COME is likely to stalk him throughout. I’m happy to take him on.
Doomben R7 – 1. Scallopini @ $3.4 ❎
SCALLOPINI made up good ground from the rear last start to finish third in the Listed Ascot Handicap and will appreciate the step up to 1350m on Saturday. They say that weight will stop a train and with 59kgs SCALLOPINI will need to carry a good horses impost. Boris Thornton will need to give him a gun ride as a number of his main rivals in betting will be finishing strongly. Others look better value.
