Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
A competitive day of racing is headlined by the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield. Last start Monash Stakes winner RED CAN MAN will get all the favours in the run and looks a great price. The resuming LA MEXICANA is a quality galloper who will enjoy the services of leading hoop Jamie Kah. With a fantastic fresh record he looks well placed at The Heath. HARPO MARX gives the impression that the 2400m this week will be ideal and his rivals will struggle to hold him out at Rosehill 😍.
The impressive HINGED steps up to 1600m for the first time and will need to carry more weight than the boys after the claim at Doomben. It is a big ask. PINDARIC continues to do all that is asked of him in Adelaide, but I think his unbeaten run is coming to an end at Morphettville. DUNBAR has been costly to follow of late and looks under the odds at Belmont ❎.
Good Luck Punters!
Rosehill R5 – 1. Harpo Marx @ $2.15 😍
HARPO MARX settled towards the rear last start and rounded up his rivals easily to win by an ever-increasing margin over 2000m in heavy going. The step up to 2400m this week looks ideal and he looks a progressive type. The 2.5kg claim is the cherry on top. He is the best bet of the day.
Caulfield R4 – 1. La Mexicana @ $3.40 😍
LA MEXICANA resumes after a 14-week spell and boasts a terrific record of six wins from nine runs. He is a Group 3 winner (below) and is undefeated over the 1100m at Caulfield. Sam and Anthony Freedman have a 29% ROI when teaming up with Jamie Kah and LA MEXICANA will get all the favours in the un. He ticks all the boxes. I’m on!

Caulfield R8 – 5. Red Can Man @ $4.40 😍
WA galloper RED CAN MAN dug in to chase down the airborne MALKOVICH in the Group 3 Sir Monash Stakes (below) and can add the Bletchingly Stakes to his resume this week. The 4yo won at his only other Caulfield 1200m attempt and will strip fitter for recent racing. Expect him to get a gun run from gate 3 before coming strongly in the run home. Yes, please.

Doomben R1 – 1. Hinged @ $1.95 ❎
With four wins and two seconds from six runs it is hard to fault the form of HINGED. The filly steps up to 1600m for the first time and will carry 1.5kg more than her rivals AFTER the 3kg claim. She will need to be good to carry the weight against the boys. I am taking her on. Pass.
Morphettville R4 – 5. Pindaric @ $2.20 ❎
The unbeaten PINDARIC keeps getting the job done. He held on to win as favourite last start despite racing greenly and sitting wide in the run. This is another step up in class and he has drawn a wide gate in the small field. He will be a sitting shot late and is likely to find one a bit better on the day. I will be betting around him.
Belmont R5 – 6. Dunbar @ $3.20 ❎
The Pike/Williams/Peters combination will saddle up a number of runners at Belmont on Saturday and all runners will be well in the market. DUNBAR looks the biggest UNDER of them all. After winning his first two runs he has failed to win at his next five runs despite being well supported and has run on strongly at his last two. He might just be an “unlucky” horse. Can he win? Of course! Will I be backing him? No thanks.
