Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
The Perth Racing Carnival is heating up, with the running of the Group 1 Railway Stakes this Saturday. Fresh from quarantine, the Wizard Pike can get INSPIRATIONAL GIRL in the big race, giving Pike his fourth Railway Stakes win. Victorian racing heads to Ballarat with the Corstens trained THE ASTROLOGIST a standout on the card after going down narrowly last start. DESTINATION was a bit flat in Listed grade last start, but will appreciate a return to Kembla Grange on Saturday where he is unbeaten over the 1000m😍.. BERDIBEK found the line strongly on Oaks Day but gate 1 might be an issue for 2kg claimer Tom Sherry at Kembla. FLOWER OF WAR and LAVERROD both struggled last start and look under the odds in their respective races ❎.
Good Luck Punters!
Kembla Grange R4- 7. Destination @ $2.7 😍
The Godolphin prepared DESTINATION drops back to a BM 78 race this week after being beaten by 5 lengths in Listed company last start. The beautifully bred 3yo is two from two over the 1000m at Kembla and Hugh Bowman replaces Rachel King. From the good gate, he is clearly the one to beat. I’m making him my best bet of the day. Yes please.
Ballarat R9 – 3. The Astrologist @ $2.9 😍
THE ASTROLOGIST hasn’t missed a place in his last seven runs which have included three wins. He was brave when narrowly defeated during Cup week (below) in Listed grade and Craig Williams retains the ride. The early money ($2.8 – $2.2) suggests he is ready to fire. I’m sticking with him.
The Astrologist was brave in defeat but it was Exhilarates day today. pic.twitter.com/0GzL7cmzaT

Ascot R8 – 11. Inspirational Girl @ $3.6 😍
INSPIRATIONAL GIRL found the line strongly up along the inside to win the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes last start (below) over 1400m and looks ready to step up to 1600m in this week’s Railway Stakes. The 5yo mare from the powerful Bob Peter’s racing operation has won eight from ten starts and will have champion WA hoop Willy Pike in the saddle fresh from a stint in quarantine. Pike has already ridden three Railway Stakes winners and gave up the ARCADIA QUEEN Mackinnon Stakes ride to get back for this race. That is good enough for me! She ticks all the boxes.

Kembla Grange R8 – 1. Berdibek @ $3.4 ❎
BERDIBEK came with a well-timed run to win the Greys race on Oaks Day (below) after settling well back in the run, despite a big weight. This week, he steps up to 1600m, a distance that he is yet to win over. Hugh Bowman has been replaced by 2kg apprentice Tom Sherry and the 7yo has drawn gate 1. I fear that he will struggle to get clear running in the straight, and it’s a big ask for Sherry to weave his way through. This is a competitive race with a host of chances. BERDIBEK looks under the odds. Pass.
A thrilling finish in the Subzero Handicap!

Ascot R7 – 1. Flower of War @ $3.5 ❎
The positives first. FLOWER OF WAR has won four from five at the track and distance and for that reason, she has been well found in markets. However, in three Black Type runs this prep, she hasn’t fired a shot, finishing towards the tail of the field on all occasions AND rises 1kg on her most recent run! I’m waiting to see more before I jump on. No thanks.
Ascot R9 – 9. Laverrod @ $3.2 ❎
LAVERROD was an impressive winner two back in an easier grade, before struggling in Group 2 company last start. The 4kg weight drop will make a difference, but this is a hot field with a number of progressive types engaged. The 4yo is yet to win in five attempts in Black Type races and will need to improve on what he showed last start. He looks under the odds.
