Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍  or if he should leave ❎  them!

What a great day of racing! It was impossible to miss the run of kiwi visitor PROBABEEL in the Show County last month and the mare can go one better up to 1400m in the Bill Ritchie Handicap at Randwick. VERRY ELLEEGANT got up off the canvas to win the Group 1 Winx Stakes first-up and will relish the mile in the Group 1 George Main Stakes. She could easily go through the Spring undefeated. LYRE gets her chance to bring up her first win for over 18 months in the How Now Stakes after an impressive first-up placing😍. The Waller-trained HUNGRY HEART is expected to relish the step up to 1400m in the Tea Rose Stakes and be too strong to run past her rivals. I think he had every chance last time and I will be betting around him. The speedy ZOUSTYLE resumes after a lengthy spell on the Gold Coast having had a throat issue and bleeding at his last two runs. His best is very good, but the odds-on quote doesn’t appeal. With a big weight and wide gate RULER BY CHOICE will be a sitting shot at Morphettville and looks under the odds ❎.

What a fantastic day of racing!

Good Luck Punters!

Randwick R5 – 5. Probabeel @ $2.9 😍

PROBABEEL put in an eye-catching run from towards the rear in the Show County (below) first up to narrowly miss. With a fantastic second-up record (3:2-1-0) and a step up to 1400m, the kiwi visitor looks beautifully placed in the Bill Ritchie Handicap. Horses have struggled to carry more than 57kgs to win the race in recent times which rules out some of her rivals at the top of the weights, while she meets ROHERYN 1.5kg better than last time. She ticks the boxes and Kerrin McEvoy steers. Ticks all the boxes.

Randwick R6 – 6. Verry Elleegant @ $2.35 😍

Is VERRY ELLEEGANT the next superstar of the Australian turf? The now 4yo mare has already won four group 1s and she brought up her first-ever first-up win in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (below) last start. Despite doing plenty of work in the run, VERRY ELLEEGANT showed champion qualities in fighting back to win and will be better over the 1600m of the George Main Stakes. The once temperamental filly looks to have settled better in her races lately. J Mac and Chris Waller may have worked her out. I think she makes a statement on Saturday and dominates. Yes Please.

Caulfield R9 – 6. Lyre @ $2.6 😍

LYRE may not in her 11 starts since winning the 2019 Blue Diamond, but she hasn’t run a bad race either. Amazingly, she has been beaten less than three lengths in all her starts, with all races in top company. The Group 3 How Now Stakes is the easiest race she has contested for a while and she found the line strongly first-up over 1100m in The Heath (below). The 1200m will be ideal. Thrown in with 55kgs from the good gate she looks the winner. I’m on!

Randwick R4 – 3. Hungry Heart @ $2 ❎

HUNGRY HEART found the line strongly to finish a close up second behind DAME GISELLE in the Furious Stakes (below) and the market suggests she can go one better in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes this week. I’m not as bullish about her. She stalked DAME GISELLE last time and couldn’t get past her in the straight and runs the risk of getting cluttered up on the rails in the run this week. Can she win? Yes. Will I take the $2? No thanks.

Gold Coast R8 – 3. Zoustyle @ $1.8 ❎

ZOUSTYLE had a fantastic start to his career, with six wins on the trot and looked set for bigger races. Then the racing gods turned. He was diagnosed with a throat issue in October 2019 and missed 20+ week before returning and bleeding first up in March. He has trialled well in preparation for his first-up run in more than half a year. One of the most interesting runners of the day. Fingers crossed that he gets through unscathed. Undoubtedly the class runner in the race, but you can leave me out at the short price! Pass.

Morphettville R6 – 3. Ruler By Choice @ $3.2 ❎

RULER BY CHOICE narrowly missed last start when well supported over 1200m and has had a freshen up. The mare is sure to have plenty of market support due to the Vorster/McEvoy combination who continue to dominate SA racing. From gate 10 and with 60kgs she will need to be used up early to find her preferred forward spot in the run. Dropping back to 1100m is also a query. She is under the odds and I will be betting around her.
