Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
It’s Caulfield Cup and The Everest day Punters! ALFA ORO and WINDSTORM both head to Caulfield in winning form and look standouts on the card. IT’S ME has been a dominant winner at all of her three race starts and with a good drawn and lightweight, The Kosciuszko looks well within reach😍. I can’t step into STAR OF THE SEAS on trial over 2000m at Randwick in the Craven Plate at the price despite his good recent Group 1 form. THE DIFFERENCE will need plenty of luck to overcome an awkward draw and a step back in distance at Morphettville, while REWRITE THE STARS is yet to win first-up in her three attempts and looks under the odds first-up at Ascot❎.
Good Luck Punters!
Randwick R5 – 14. It’s Me @ $2.2 😍
IT’S ME has taken all before her with three dominant victories at her only starts, including the last two in Highway handicaps at Randwick over 1000m and 1100m respectively. She was terrific last start when coming from well back (below) to win easily and the step up to 1200m for the Kosciuszko looks ideal. Drawn well in gate 7 and thrown in with 53kgs bad luck looks her main danger. Yes please.

Caulfield R7 – 6. Alfa Oro @ $2.15 😍
The Matt Laurie trained ALFA ORO took his winning streak to five with a comfortable win first-up over 955m at Moonee Valley (below). This is the speed machines biggest test so far, but he makes his own luck on the speed and has drawn well. His record of six wins and two seconds from eight runs speaks for itself. The best bet of the day. He is well placed and should be winning.
“He’s a class above this lot!”

Caulfield R8 – 9. Windstorm @ $2.5 😍
WINDSTORM has run strongly from the rear to get the money at his last two runs over the 1400m at Caulfield including a dominant win in the Weekend Hussler Stakes (below) last week. Drawn wide the 4yo will drift back in the run before coming with his run out wide in the straight, under the Wizard Pike who is fresh from four winners last week. WINDSTORM could be the real deal. I’m on.
Willie Pike certainly had a talented horse under him. How about this win from Windstorm. 🧙♂️ pic.twitter.com/4EBjatyTbV

Morphettville R5- 1. The Difference @ $2.2 ❎
THE DIFFERENCE has been racing in great form with two wins and two placings from his last four runs and will jump a short-priced favourite at Morphettville. Interestingly, Team McEvoy has opted to go with 2kg claimer Jessica Eaton for the first time, while Barend Vorster rides the stablemate. THE DIFFERENCE drops back in distance to 1200m and from gate 11 Eaton is likely to drift back in the run to find some cover before making his run in the straight. He will be running on but risks running out of time in the straight down in distance. Pass.
Randwick R8 – 2. Star Of The Seas @ $2 ❎
STAR OF THE SEAS steps up to 2000m for the first time in his career in the Craven Plate and punters are being asked to take even money for the Waller-trained 6yo. His recent form over the mile has been sound in Group 1 company, including a close up second in the George Main Stakes where he was unlucky in the straight. He is the class runner in the race, no doubt. Can he run out a strong 2000m? Probably. Am I taking even money to find out? No thanks.
Ascot R2 – 2. Rewrite The Stars @ $2.5 ❎
REWRITE THE STARS resumes this week after showing plenty of promise at her first three preparations, with three wins and four placings from 11 runs. She has trialled well for her first-up run and the early money suggests a good showing. However, she is yet to win first-up and will carry 58kgs after the claim. Definitely one to follow going forward, but not for me this weekend at the price.
