Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎  them!

It is a big day of racing at Randwick with four Group 1 races on the card. The New Zealand visitor PROBABEEL has won twice already this prep and looks well placed against her own sex in the Group 1 Queen of The Turf Stakes. MR QUICKIE showed when winning last start that he has lost none of his finishing speed and he will relish the 1600m at Caulfield. In Adelaide, INSTANT CELEBRITY resumes after a lengthy lay off and has trialled well. She looks to have a big future ahead of her and can bring up her fifth career win😍.

VERRY ELLEEGANT got the prize against ADDEYBB in the Ranvet Stakes, but I think that the visitor can turn the tables on the superstar mare today, with Cox Plate winner SIR DRAGONET the wildcard. in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. MAHAMEDEIS has been hard to catch and will be going around without me at Caulfield, while STEINEM will need to be good to overcome the step up in grade and the “visitors draw” at Morphettville in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes ❎.

Good Luck Punters!

Caulfield R4 – 1. Mr Quickie @ $1.75 😍

MR QUICKIE powered to the line from the rear of the field to win the Group 3 Victoria Cup last start (below) and the step up to 1600m looks ideal. He is a star with two Group 1s to his name and got to within 3 lengths of Queen of Turf favourite PROBABEEL earlier this prep.Having carried 60.5kgs in the Victoria Cup, the 61kgs won’t be a problem. Expect him to be too strong in the run home. The best bet of the day.

Morphettville R6 – 1. Instant Celebrity @ $2.90 😍

The first-up INSTANT CELEBRITY has won four from five, with her only defeat a third placing in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas back in October when she jumped as one of the favourites. She was an impressive winner of the Thousand Guineas Prelude (below) last prep and has trialled well in preparation for her first-up run in the Listed Redelva Stakes. While I expect her to do her best work over further ground later on in her campaign, her class will be enough to get her over the line this week. Yes please.

Randwick R9 – 1. Probabeel @ $2.50 😍

NZ visitor PROBEEL has been racing in great form with two wins this prep, including a dominant win in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (below). She beat the boys to win the Group 1 Epsom Handicap over the mile at Randwick last year and takes on the girls only this week. Kerrin McEvoy has won on her before and the 57kgs looks a luxury. PROBABEEL will enjoy an economical run in the race and be too quick for her rivals when produced for her sprint in the straight. I’m on.

Caulfield R1 – 2. Mahamedeis @ $1.90 ❎

MAHAMEDEIS put in his best run for a while to finish third in the Easter Cup last start and will go around as a short-priced favourite in the first at Caulfield. He is proving a tough horse to catch in recent times, having not won for seven starts after recording back to back wins in the middle of last year. This is a class drop for the 6yo and looks a winnable race, but he does jump 3kgs in weight on his last start. Can he win? Yes. Am I taking odds on? No thanks.

Rosehill R8 – 7. Verry Elleegant @ $2.20 ❎

The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the most anticipated race on the card at Randwick. It pits the local superstar VERRY ELLEEGANT against overseas visitor ADDEYBB, with Cox Plate winner SIR DRAGONET lurking in the background. VERRY ELLEEGANT took the honours in the Ranvet Stakes, taking a sit behind ADDEYBB and running past him in the straight. It was a 10 out of 10 ride from JMAC on that occasion. ADDEYBB will strip much fitter for the run and Tom Marquand will have learnt from that experience and I don’t expect VERRY ELLEEGANT to find it as easy this time around. While SIR DRAGONET can take a sit and upset the pair. I think VERRY ELLEEGANT is a risk and the $2.20 doesn’t represent any value. Pass.

Morphettville R7 – 7. Steinem @ $2.20 ❎

The Maher and Eustace trained STEINEM has done everything right at her two starts, winning well at Sandown and Pakenham. Bred in the purple, she steps up to 1800m in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes and gives the impression that the further she goes, the better she will get. However, she will jump from the widest gate and maps to drop back to last. The pressure will be on Jye McNeil to find clear running when it matters in the straight and not get caught behind tiring horses. She looks the best horse in the race, but favourite backers will be on edge throughout the race, I will be betting around her.
