Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
A HUGE Saturday of high-quality racing coming from Randwick and Flemington this week. The resuming BROOKLYN HUSTLE and SANTA ANA LANE both look the goods at Flemington. Tassie mare MYSTIC JOURNEY can bounce back from a shock last-start defeat and win the Group 1 Underwood Stakes 😍. FIDELIA was expensive to punters last start and may have missed her chance this campaign. At Randwick, it is hard to back VERRY ELLEEGANT with her bad manners while CLASSIQUE LEGEND looks under the odds in a quality field ❎.
Good Luck Punters.
Made an eye-catching race track debut when coming from last at the turn to win at Moonee Valley. Was not far away in the Group 1 Blue Diamond and has won both her trials heading into Saturday. She could be well above average and I’m on!
SANTA ANA LANE resumes on Saturday in the Gilgai Stakes and it looks like a match race between he and SUNLIGHT. With five Group 1 wins to his name (including the TJ Smith below) he is the best sprinter in the country and will only need to be near his best to win on his way to The Everest. Looks the winner.

MYSTIC JOURNEY’S unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt halt when going down to 100-1 pop GATTING in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (below) last start. Considering she went down by less than a length, the hysterical reaction to her defeat has been puzzling. Steps up to the 2000 metres in the Turnbull Stakes and I think she will get the trip. Yes please.

This is a top quality field. CLASSIQUE LEGEND resumed well, with a strong second behind the airborne PIERATA in the Shorts. I just can’t believe that OSBORNE BULLS isn’t favourite! Therefore, the $2.20 CLASSIQUE LEGEND is unders for me. No thanks.
The Australian Oaks winner is yet to reproduce her Autumn form this campaign. VERRY ELLEGANT just does too much wrong in her races to back her with any confidence. The step up to 2000 metres will help, but can she settle for JMAC and finish strongly? Pass.
Was held up for a run at a vital stage last start and should have won. Returns to the same track and distance this week but has the bird flown? This is a really strong field and she hasn’t been able to beat some of her rivals at two attempts this prep. I’m betting around her.
