Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
The Perth racing carnival rolls on this weekend at Ascot and the Williams/Pike juggernaut looks set for another good day. FORCEFUL should get a soft run for the Wizard in the Tattersalls Cup from Gate 1 and looks the testing material. Barend Vorster travels to the Valley to ride BALAABEL and the filly looks well placed by Team McEvoy, while SO DAPPER looks hard to beat at Doomben after a hat trick of wins on the Sunshine Coast😍. I’m happy to oppose Winterbottom Stakes favourite TREKKING from an inside gate, while OUTBACK BARBIE and HANDLE THE TRUTH look under the odds at Doomben and Rosehill respectively ❎.
Good Luck Punters.
The Grant and Alana Williams trained 5yo steps up to the 2100 metres for the first time in the Listed Tattersalls Cup. He has won 7 from 18 and will get every possible chance to get the trip for the Wizard Pike from gate 1. Was narrowly defeated last start (below) and can one better this week. I think he will get the journey and am happy to back the Williams and Pike combo. Yes please.

The Laxon and Symons trained galloper is looking for four wins on the trot, after a dominant hat trick of wins at the Sunshine Coast. Will make his own luck from the front and if Larry Cassidy can get across from gate 14 he looks the testing material here. This is a step up in class, but he looks up to it.
The all-conquering Adelaide combination of Team McEvoy and Barend Vorster head to Moonee Valley on Saturday with BALAABEL looking beautifully placed after breaking through at Morphettville last start. The filly has been well supported since markets opened and if she runs up to her last effort she looks the winner. I’m on.
The Godolphin sprinter is looking to be the first favourite since BUFFERING in 2015 to win the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes. Is in red hot form having placed in the Redzel Stakes and Everest at his last two runs. The inside draw (gate 4) is a concern with TREKKING’s run on style of racing. Jockey Kerrin McEvoy will need some luck in the straight to get past his rivals here. I’m happy to take him on.
Was a winner of the Kosciusko two starts back, before placing in the Goulburn Cup last start. Drops back to 1100 metres for the Listed Starlight Stakes on Saturday and he looks under the odds here. The Kosciusko was his grand final. Pass
Was an impressive winner first-up in the Keith Noud at Doomben last start. Returns to same track and distance on Saturday, but is yet to win second-up (4:0-1-1). Gate 13 doesn’t help. Not for me this week.
