Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
With five Group 1s, the eyes of the nation will turn to Rosehill this Saturday. The Mighty Mare WINX at $1.06 stifles betting in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes, while the heir apparent THE AUTUMN SUN looks set to add another Group 1 victory to his already impressive resume in the Rosehill Guineas. AVILIUS can make amends for a disappointing Australian Cup run with a win in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.😍 I’m happy to oppose a couple of Phillip Stokes trained runners at Mornington on Saturday, MUSIC BAY who has proved expensive to punters of late, and the poorly drawn REALLY DISCREET.❎ Another Stokes runner, EQUAL LOVE looks beautifully placed at Morphettville😍 while the strong frontrunner MISHANI HUSTLER may have to work too hard in the lead to win at Eagle Farm.❎
Bring on Saturday 😉
The star colt put up one of the performances of the decade when closing late to win the Randwick Guineas (below). The step up to 2000 metres this week looks ideal and only a ton of bad luck can stop him from recording his fifth Group 1 win. I cannot wait to watch him. He wins!
Wow! The Autumn Sun did his best Winx impression flying home from the clouds to win the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, firmly asserting himself as the best three-year-old in Australia in the process. pic.twitter.com/pEjspzcTjT

The Godolphin trained stayer was disappointing when unplaced as an odds on favourite in the Group 1 Australian Cup last start, where he looked to have no excuses. Returns to Sydney this weekend and has won at his only previous run at the track. Prior to the Australian Cup, his preparation had been faultless, including a dominant win in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (below). I’m prepared to forgive his last start as just a bad day at the office and back up this weekend. AVILIUS has won over the trip, can handle the wet and Kerrin McEvoy is a positive jockey booking. I’m on.
"Oh it's a class act!"Avilius knows his job and does it oh so well ✨ Hugh Bowman and James Cummings make it a double at Caulfield!

The Phillip Stokes trained filly has been a tough horse to catch for punters, with one win and three seconds from her seven career starts. Was backed to the exclusion of all other runners at her last start when a defeated $1.45 favourite on the Sandown Hillside. Has drawn to get a good run and looks well placed. However, it is a year since her only win and she continues to find one better in races. Pass.
The 2yo filly impressed when winning on debut at big odds at Sandown and wasn’t disgraced in the Group 2 Sires Produce at Flemington last start. Has drawn the widest gate and this is her first race at the tight turning Mornington track. Looks to have a lot of upside, but I’m happy to bet around her at the short odds this weekend.
Has been impressive winning her last two at Morphettville (below) and Balaklava. Looks beautifully placed here. With a good draw and 3kg claim for Georgina Cartwright, the progressive Phillip Stokes trained filly should bring up a hat trick of wins on Saturday. She’s got these covered.

It is hard to knock his form, with two wins on the bounce and he will strip rock hard fit again this weekend. The concern is the wide gate and how much juice he will use up leading on Saturday. The Ben Currie trained galloper may be vulnerable late giving the swoopers last shot. Expect him to run his usual honest race, but I’m happy to bet around him this weekend.
