Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
This weekend there looks to be a couple of standout bets with horses is superb form stepping up to in grade. BEGOOD TOYA MOTHER destroyed his rivals on Easter Monday and looks well placed at Flemington, while REELEM RUBY should handle weekend grade at Rosehill. SPRIGHT can make it back to back Group 1 wins in the Goodwood at Morphettville with the evergreen Damien Oliver to steer. MISS LEONIDAS, GEM OF SCOTLAND and STAR OF THE SEAS are all in consistent form, but may find a rival or two too good for them this weekend in open races.
Good Luck Punters. 😉
Flemington R3 -3. Miss Leonidas @ $2.80 ❎
Won the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes two starts back and returns to the more suitable 1000 metres this weekend. Has raced down the straight once before for a third and this looks a competitive race. While a forward showing will not surprise, the $2.80 looks unders and I’m happy to risk her this week.
Dominated his rivals last start at Sandown winning by a big margin (below). Steps up in grade this week and it was hard not to be impressed with his last run. BEGOOD TOYA MOTHER might be one out of the box and I’m with him again this week.

Broke through for a deserved Group 1 last start (below). Will only need to reproduce the same type of run again this week from the wide gate to add the Goodwood to his CV. He looks the winner.
Spright was sensational, what a star! 🌟

Doomben R3 – 2. Gem of Scotland @ $3.30 ❎
The 2YO filly is yet to taste defeat in her 4 career starts. Has had a freshen up since her last run and meets quality opposition here. From gate 16 I’m prepared to risk her this week.
The Waller-trained gelding has been racing consistently and looks well placed again this week. Steps up to 1500 metres for the first time and will carry 57.5kgs after the claim and has drawn poorly. Happy to risk him this week. Happy to leave him for when conditions are more favourable.
The Snowden trained filly is building an impressive record with two wins and three minors from five career starts. Her last start Warwick Farm showed that she is up to city grade and Tommy Berry rides. Ticks all the boxes and should feature in the feature. I’m on.
