Not content to train winners all around the country on a Saturday afternoon, the dominant Chris Waller yard has hit a purple patch of form under lights at Canterbury.
Racing writer Justin Devine, takes a look at the chances of the Waller runners and can’t see any reason why the hot form can’t continue.
Canterbury has always been a happy hunting ground for prolific trainer Chris Waller. Since the start of the current season, Waller has saddled up 19 winners and 32 placegetters from close to 120 starters. The ROI of 33% is more impressive when you consider that the stable may have more than one runner in the respective races. However, it is over the last month that the smart punters have cashed in.
The last four Friday nights have seen some extraordinary results, even by the high standards set by the stable. Ten of the 26 Waller prepared runners have won under the Canterbury lights, with a further eight filling minor placings. Of the ten winners, MADDI ROCKS ($3.4) was the shortest-priced winner back on the 31st of January, while LIARA ($26) paid the most last Friday night. Punters following the Waller stable while enjoying a Friday night knock-off drink in that period, have collected on a staggering 273% ROI. This from the nations leading stable!
With a number of strong chances again this Friday night, this current hot streak looks set to continue.
Canterbury R1 – 3. Castlecomer @ $9
The 2yo has chased home some quality gallopers in his only two race track appearances at Caulfield and Flemington. Makes his Sydney debut here in a very winnable maiden on the back of a nice trial. Hugh Bowman takes the ride. Respect any market moves.
Canterbury R2 – 8. Joliette @ $8.5
The filly is knocking on the door of a win after successive minor placings at Kembla Grange and Gosford. Gets in well with the 55.5kgs from gate 3. J MAC is a nice booking. She looks ready to breakthrough.
Canterbury R3 – 2. Yonkers @ $3.8
The Irish import is looking for a hat trick of wins, after impressive wins at Gosford, and more recently over the same track and distance. He looks a progressive type who should handle the extra weight this week. Was a dual acceptor, but has been scratched from race 5.
Canterbury R3 – 9. Austria @ $4.2
Has been a tad disappointing this preparation, stringing together a number of placings when well supported, before having no luck last time. Should be peaking on Friday night, and with even luck from gate 1, she will fight out the finish. Worth another try.
Canterbury R4 – 2. Impactful @ $4.2
Followed up a solid debut run over 1400m with a strong win under lights over 1550m ago. The stable has taken no time in stepping the beautifully bred 3yo up to 1900m this week. Brenton Avdulla will take him back from the wide gate and look to close strongly late. He should fight out the finish.
Canterbury R8 – 15. Clairvue Missy @ $34
Having moved to the Sydney stables, this is the most intriguing Waller runner of the night. CLAIRVUE MISSY has done all her racing in Queensland where she was tried in Listed and Group 3 company after an impressive maiden win on the Gold Coast. You would have to assume that the stable has a strong opinion of her, and she hasn’t delivered…yet! The filly’s only win was first up on rain effected going, conditions she may encounter again on Friday. Kerrin McEvoy should give her a good steer from a middle draw. A blowout chance in the last.
