Horse Racing – Love It Or Leave It | Sat 7th August

Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎  them!

Group racing returns to Randwick this week with the running of the Group 2 Missile Stakes a highlight. FASIKA won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes first-up earlier this year and is well placed to do the same in the Missile. Team Williams look to have a potential star in the stable with HOSIER and he should have no problems getting the prize at Flemington, while KING MAGNUS will only need a touch of luck in the straight to bring up a hat trick of wins, under emerging apprentice, Alana Kelly 😍.

LINDHOUT and MELODY MAN both had “hard luck” stories at their most recent runs as favourites. From wide gates this week, they will settle rearward before coming with strong runs in the straight. I’m prepared to take them on at Flemington and Murray Bridge respectively. SILKINIZE is looking for his first win in a year at Belmont and while he looks ready to win, I fear he might be a “non -winner” and a money muncher for favourite punters ❎.

Good Luck Punters!

Randwick R7 – 7. Fasika @ $2.90 😍

FASIKA resumes in the Group 2 Missile Stakes and will get conditions that suit. She won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (below) first up earlier this year and has a great first-up record over the 1200m at Randwick. Mares have won four of the last seven Missile Stakes and with less weight than her rivals, FASIKA is beautifully placed. Yes please!

BET ON MISSILE STAKES HERE:

Flemington R6 – 7. King Magnus @ $2.80 😍

KING MAGNUS has found the line strongly to win his last two at Caulfield and has drawn to get the box seat run again. Apprentice Alana Kelly has partnered the 6yo to his last two wins and retains the ride with her 3kg claim. In career-best form, fit and with an inform jockey onboard, he ticks all the boxes. Expect him to bring up his hat trick.

BET ON FLEMINGTON RACE 6 HERE:

Flemington R7 – 7. Hosier @ $1.55 😍

HOSIER has looked superb since relocating to Australia for Team Williams, winning all three starts including a dominant win at Sandown last start (below). He is ready to step up to 2000m for the first time this prep and looks better than his rivals. It is that simple! He could have a big race in him this spring. The best bet of the day.

BET ON FLEMINGTON RACE 7 HERE:

Flemington R4 – 7. Lindhout @ $2.80 ❎

LINDHOUT got well back last start and rattled home to finish third when a heavily supported favourite, leaving punters bemused. Craig Newitt replaces the 3kg claimer this week which is a significant change. From a wide gate, the 5yo will settle towards the tail before powering home in the straight. Can she go past them this week? I’m expecting her to have plenty to do over the last 400m. The gate will beat her. Pass.

BET ON FLEMINGTON RACE 4 HERE:

Murray Bridge R6 – 5. Melody Man @ $2.10 ❎

MELODY MAN is another galloper who has settled well back in his recent runs and found the line strongly for a couple of minor placings when well backed. The market suggests that he will appreciate the step up to 1600m this week and run past his rivals in the straight. Paul Gatt will need some luck to find a good spot in the run, or risk being caught wide. The short price doesn’t represent any value and I will be betting around him.

BET ON MURRAY BRIDGE RACE 6 HERE:

Belmont R5 – 6. Silkinize @ $2.10 ❎

SILKINIZE has been a model of consistency with three placings this prep, including a strong finish for second last start. However, he has not won for a year and continues to be an “unlucky” runner in races. Is he one of those horses? I’ve been burned by him before and won’t be backing up again this week. No thanks.
