Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
The revamped Zipping Classic meeting moves to Caulfield for the first time and there are a couple of excellent bets on the card. Melbourne Cup placegetter SPANISH MISSION makes his debut for the Moody stable and to say that he will find the Group 2 Zipping Classic easier than the Melbourne Cup would be an understatement. He only needs to go around unscathed to win. DECENT RAINE was far too good for her rivals and is on the quick back up this week at Caulfield for the Maher and Eustace yard. She looks to have a bright future. MIGHTYBEEL found the line strongly to win over 1850m last start and is screaming out for the 2000m of the ATC Cup this week. She can add a black-type win to her CV😍.
COMFORT GIRL has been an expensive horse to follow so far this prep and punters are likely to be left disappointed once again at Morphettville this week. She will run on from the rear, but not fast enough to get the prize. NOWHITEFLAG is likely to find the 1400m too much for him at Ascot, while the prolific THE HARROVIAN may need the run first-up before threatening later into his prep ❎.
Good Luck Punters!
Caulfield R3 – 1. Decent Raine @ $2.70 😍
DECENT RAINE bounced back from a luckless run during Cup week with a dominant victory at Ballarat last Saturday (below). On the quick backup this weekend she looks a class above her rivals. She will only need even luck from the wide gate. I’m on!

Rosehill R4 – 5. Mightybeel @ $2.60 😍
MIGHTYBEEL found the line strongly when she goy clear to win well over 1850m at Newcastle last start (below). While this is a step up in class, she did find the line strongly last start and gives the impression that the 2000m will be ideal. The Waller stable is on fire and I expect MIGHTYBEEL to power past her rivals in the run home. She can add the Listed ATC Cup to her CV. Yes please.
A mighty win for 4YO son of Savabeel, Mightybeel (ex Super Power) at Newcastle💪🏻. He was a $200k @KarakaChat National Yearling grad for Little Avondale Stud. Congratulations to breeder Jim Barlow & @_GoRacing 🤗 pic.twitter.com/KGfrFyQskD

Caulfield R7 – 1. Spanish Miss @ $1.60 😍
SPANISH MISS finished third in the Melbourne Cup behind VERRY ELLEEGANT and INCENTIVISE on his Australian debut. He finished less than a length behind the superstar STRADIVARIUS at the start before the Melbourne Cup and is now with the Peter Moody yard. How is that for a formline? Wow. He only needs to benear his best to put a space on his rivals. The best bet of the day.

Morphettville R7 – 8. Comfort Girl @ $3.30 ❎
COMFORT GIRL made it back to back second placings when she found the line strongly last start after getting well back in the run. That was over 1950m and the 4yo drops back in distance to 1800m this week. How will she handle the step back in ground? She looks to need further and not less. She continues to be thereabouts without winning in her four runs this prep despite being well backed on each occasion. I will be betting around her.
Gold Coast R7 – 3. The Harrovian @ $3.20 ❎
The cult figure returns to the track after a 24-week break and there is no doubting his ability or his will to win. He had no luck in the Group 1 Stradbroke last prep (I’m still crying!) and has won 17 from 34. I just wonder if he can get the job done first up over 1400m with 60kgs. He is getting older and might need the run. I love him, BUT will be waiting until later in his prep. Not this week!
Ascot R4 – 2. Nowhiteflag @ $2.20 ❎
Not much went right for NOWHITEFLAG when he was beaten as a $1.80 favourite last start. He slipped at the start, overraced and was the first horse beaten over 1200m. The 4yo has done his best racing over 1000m and he steps up to 1400m for the first time this week. He recent bad manners doesn’t fill me with confidence and he will struggle to get the trip. The $2.20 looks under the odds and I will be betting around him.
