Horse Racing โ€“ Love It Or Leave It | Sat 10th July

Placing a bet on a favourite โ€“ some punters canโ€™t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them ๐Ÿ˜ or if he should leave โŽย  them!

The Bjorn Baker trained MALKOVICH put in a terrific display to win last start with 61kgs and can repeat the effort in the Group 3 Sir John Monash at Caulfield. After finishing just behind the placegetters at Listed level last start, MAHA looks beautifully placed at Gawler and will be hard to catch. The lightly raced ZARATITE was solid when resuming and is capable of finding another gear second up for the Wizard of the West in Belmont๐Ÿ˜.

HULK and RUBISAKI head a list of the “usual suspects” at Randwick and haven’t won for some time. Both gallopers are under the odds and I while be betting around them. The consistent AXE jumps up in weight and back in distance at Doomben and I’m concerned about how the track will be playing at that stage of the day. I’m happy to take him on! โŽ

Good Luck Punters!

Belmont R4 – 2. Zaratite @ $2.50 ๐Ÿ˜

ZARAMITE put in a solid run to finish second when first up and will strip much fitter for the hitout. He has had nine career starts for four wins and four placings and the Peters/Pike/Williams team have been patient with the 5yo. Expect him to find a good spot in the run before finding the line well. Yes please. The best bet of the day.

BET ON BELMONT RACE 4 HERE:

Gawler R7 – 10. Maha @ $2.60 ๐Ÿ˜

MAHA was beaten by less than a length in the Listed Creswick Stakes at Flemington last start and returns to Gawler in a much easier race this week. Barend Vorster will have the option to either lead or take a sit from the good gate and the filly looks to have a class edge. The McEvoy team has been in great recent form and MAHA should give them another winner. I’m on.

BET ON GAWLER RACE 7 HERE:

Caulfield R8 – 10. Malkovich @ $3.20 ๐Ÿ˜

Sydney galloper MALKOVICH was very impressive on his Melbourne debut (below), dominating his rivals to win well despite a wide run and 61kgs. Up in class to Group 3 grade for the Sir John Monash he only needs to repeat that performance to salute. Sure, he has the “visitors draw” once again, but he does drop 3kgs on his last outing and will make his own luck. Bad luck looks his main danger.

BET ON SIR JOHN MONASH STAKES HERE:

Randwick R6 – 3. Hulk @ $3.10 โŽ

HULK had excuses when a beaten favourite last start making it three placings from four runs this prep. He is one of those horses who tends to find trouble in his races regularly before zooming home. Three wins from 27 starts backs up that assertion. His form warrants respect. Am I backing him? No thanks.

BET ON RANDWICK RACE 6 HERE:

Randwick R8 – 6. Rubisaki @ $3.20 โŽ

What to make of RUBISAKI? The Paddy Payne trained mare won six out of seven early in her career and looked set for Group 1 glory. She has shown some glimpses in recent starts to suggest she is finding some form, including a placing in the Group 1 Sangster Stakes at Morphettville earlier this year. Her best is better than that of her rivals. She hasn’t won in 63 weeks. Pass.

BET ON WINTER CUP HERE:

Doomben R7 – 1. Axe @ $1.90 โŽ

The Michael Costa trained AXE is racing in terrific form with placings in the Eyeliner Stakes and the BRC Sprint during this prep. He is a speedy horse who will attempt to find the front and run his rivals into the ground. He does drop back in distance to 1200m this week and will jump 5kgs in weight on his most recent runs. Can he lead all the way on a soft 7? Will the rails be the place to be? I wont be taking odds on to find out!
