The biggest day of the racing year for Rosehill Gardens, just so happens this Saturday with the running of its flagship event, the Gr 1 Golden Slipper, accompanied by four other big Gr 1 races.
One of which includes probably the best horse in the southern hemisphere, Autumn Glow.
So, yeah, a huge day coming.
I’m going to unpack every one of the big races, looking at how each event will be run and finding the top four home in each race. Wish me luck!
Race 8 – Gr 1 $5million Golden Slipper (2YOs)
The $64 question here is will pace hold up or will back markers be suited by the track conditions? And, adding another variable is the fact the pace has all drawn deep. CLOSER TO FREE is in 17, but comes in with some scratchings, PARADOXIUM is in 18 and PEMBREY is in 19. If AGRARIAN GIRL runs, she is in 20. All of them are front-runners. So, I suspect all of them will ping and burn across. WARWOVEN likes to lead too and he is in 14 but he has shown he can ease out of an early battle. I assume he hands up a little and tries to find cover. By contrast MUSIC TIME in 8 probably finds an ideal lane as will SPICY MISS in 5. CAMPIONE D’TALIA has always dropped back but coming out of 4 he may push forward a bit to hold a nicer spot in the big field, and CHAYAN in 12 looks to settle with cover back about 9th early near STREISAND. If the Vic fillies find that cover, and the speed of the race, is as expected too super hot, they will be very well served.
STRETAN RULER is interesting. He’s in 13 and may well be wide all the way, while both FIREBALL and GUEST HOUSE look certain to get dream runs with cover but worse than midfield. I don’t think, after failing last start by going hard early, that HIDRIX would press on this time, but having drawn the fence he has to use it to a degree and so should be about 6th on the rails in a nice enough spot alongside SHIKI.
In the battle for pace, Pembrey probably leads from Paradoxium and Closer To Free. Agrarian Girl, should she gain a start, will be there too but probably 3 deep to the bend.
This leaves Spicy Miss, Music Time and Fireball in nice spots with the Vic pair Chayan and Streisand tracking them.
Clear air is the order of the day as they turn. Pembrey I suspect outlasts the other speedsters and will be in front at the 200m but Spicy Miss, Warwoven, Chayan and Streisand will all be making long hard runs.
I do think Pembrey is the best juvenile in the race but she will run out of gas with 75m to go because of the early effort, and this will allow the other 3 fillies to pounce.
In the end Chayan for mine, claims Pembrey, takes the lead and wins with Streisand and Spicy Miss battling it out for 3rd. Campione D’italia will be best of the males a nostril in front of Warwoven.
Tips: CHAYAN ($6.00) 1, Pembrey ($21) 2, Streisand ($7.50) 3 and Spicy Miss ($11) 4th.

Race 5 – Gr 1 $1million Ranvet Stakes (WFA)
No brainer how this will be run and won. LINDEMANN will take up the running with SIR DELIUS going after him early and settling in 2nd. STEFI MAGNETICA and ALALACANCE will occupy the next line with the Waller pair AELIANA and TRINITY COLLEGE out the back.
Sir Delius is very tough and he will make Lindemann work which will run the sting out of him down the straight. This means that Aeliana will run home hard with the last shot at Sir Delius, who will be in front of her and he doesn’t like to be beaten.
I suspect his toughness serves him best and he hangs on to beat her with Trinity College grabbing Lindemann late for 3rd.
Tips: SIR DELIUS ($3.20) 1, Aeliana ($1.65) 2, Trinity College ($18.00) 3 and Lindemann ($10) 4.

Race 6 – $750,000 Gr 1 Rosehill Guineas (3YOs)
I’ve always been a big fan of winning form. And OBSERVER brings that to this. He’s won a couple of Gr1s in his recent run of 4 straight victories over his peers. Looks likely to just roll to the front at whatever stage of the race he wants to, probably from gate rise. And should stay there.
AUTUMN BOY has never raced at this trip but everything suggests he will get it and get it well. From this gate he will sit in 3rd all the way. He is on his home track so should sprint home hard being 3rd up. As will DEAL DONE FAST and VICTORIOUS SPIRIT, both of whom will go back early. They are lightly raced but have staying talent.
Tips: OBSERVER ($2.50) 1, Autumn Boy ($2.20) 2, Deal Done Fast ($26) 3, Victorious Spirit ($13) 4.

Race 7 – $1million George Ryder Stakes (WFA)
This looks a one act affair as the market and everyone suggests. AUTUMN GLOW has already built a reputation as the best horse in the land winning all of her 10 starts to date. In that sequence, she has earned $7.5million, won 2 x Gr 1 races, plus the $10million Golden Eagle. Jay Mac rides her here and he has won 6 times on her, plus, as if she needed anything else, this is her pet trip and home track.
They will queue up for the minors. The main contenders are LADY SHENANDOAH, who is a 3 x Gr 1 winner including the Coolmore Classic this trip, this track and she is peaking here, 3rd up. LINEBACKER is 2nd up but won 2nd up last prep, HEADLEY GRANGE and GRINGOTTS should settle midfield or worse but are very proficient at this trip and fit enough to dash hard late, while Melbourne’s consistent EVAPORATE is also 3rd up, and was placed in the Golden Eagle here behind Autumn Glow. Great contest.
Tips: AUTUMN GLOW ($1.30) 1, Lady Shenandoah ($11) 2, Evaporate ($21) 3, Linebacker ($31) 4.

Race 9 – $1million The Galaxy
This is as open as the Sydney heads. Wow. Everything can win. GRAFTERBURNERS fits that mould of winning form, having saluted at his past 4 starts which included the $3million Sunlight over 1100m at the Gold Coast. But, he’s rising in grade here. Still, he firmed overnight in the betting. The dangers include backmarker RESERVE BANK, who resumes here after winning 3 in a row including the Gr 1 Goodwood over 1200m.
He can really fly late and has wet track form. MARHOONA was beaten a nose last start in this company when on speed by GENEROSITY who she meets again, this time 1kg better off. And being 3rd up, plus having won the Gr 1 Golden Slipper at this track, Marhoona looms large. As does Generosity and old MAZU too, who was 3rd in that race Generosity won. He loves it damp.
JEDIBEEL is ready but has a horrible gate so probably drops back looking for cover. He is 2nd up and can sprint hard when he wants to, while topweight BRIASA is first up here. He has form while fresh, has won here and probably also eases out early from his gate. Can finish strongly though.
Tips: MARHOONA ($12) 1, Reserve Bank ($9.00) 2, Jedibeel ($21) 3, Mazu ($14) 4.
