Gr 1 – Turnbull Stakes

Our Gr 1 expert Ric Chapman has looked over this year's Turnbull Stakes. Quite a few hopes. He maps it and finds the top 4 home for us.

1. Circle Of Fire (11)

J: John Allen T: Ciaron Maher

Is an out-and-out stayer who should find this too short. Easily won the 3200m Sydney Cup last prep but was thrashed in the mud when resuming over a mile. Look for him later in the prep.

2. Bois D'Argent (14)

J: Jamie Mott T: Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald

Led all the way to win the gr 1 Doomben Cup this trip on a damp track last prep. This is harder and he did throw up the white flag quickly when resuming and a fading 11th in the Gr 1 Underwood over 1800m. Should improve but needs to lift a great deal.

3. Buckaroo (8)

J: Joao Moreira T: Chris Waller

Looks to be in career-best form and will give this a shake. Responds extremely well to Joao Moreira which was indicated last start when they easily raced away to win the Gr 1 Underwood over 1800 when 3rd up. Is super fit, will love this track and looms very large.

4. Via Sistina (12)

Best Bet
J: Damian Lane T: Chris Waller

One time touted the best horse in the land but looked far from it when plodding 5th to Mr Bightside and Pride Of Jenni in the Gr 1 Makybe Diva over a mile. Better suited this trip and this isn’t as strong a field. Expect a complete form reversal now that she is 3rd up.

5. Warmonger (10)

Best Value
J: Michael Dee T: Mick Price & Michael Kent

Looks set to be a major player in the Gr 1 Melbourne Cup in a few weeks and those who do well in that race always run brilliantly in this race. So, he rates very highly. Won the Gr 1 Qld Derby brilliantly on a wet track. Is effective on dry too. Looms very large. Have in your numbers.

6. Eliyass (16)

J: Ethan Brown T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

This is the dark horse. Has had 11 starts and won 9 of them, including the past 3 on the trot over this trip in Sydney. Up in class here but knows how to win and can run time. Oddly, is even better on a wet track. Bad draw so probably goes hard early to sit outside the leader. Is very tough.

7. Atishu (5)

J: Mark Zahra T: Chris Waller

Proven tough Gr 1 winner who loves this track. And this distance also. Both starts this time up have been average though. Better placed here and is 3rd up so expect her to get back and run home well. If she runs to her very best she can win.

8. Huetor (6)

J: Koby Jennings T: Peter Snowden

Proven multiple Gr 1 winner but shocked everyone with his last to 2nd effort when resuming at $71 last start in the 1800m Underwood behind Buckaroo last start. Should be fitter now and has a good 2nd up record. Loves it damp too. Is in and out but that effort last start was very impressive.

9. Sharp 'N' Smart (13)

J: Luke Currie T: Team Rogerson

Was the top 3YO in his cohort but form has fallen away this year. Ran 2nd in a handicap last start in NZ in the mud. At his best is a major threat but doesn’t seem the horse he was.

10. Young Werther (2)

J: Jye Mcneil T: Danny O'Brien

Loves this track and this trip for that matter and is a stakes winner from last start. Up in class here but from this gate he sits in 3rd with the run of the race all the way which makes him a major threat. Have in your numbers.

12. Place Du Carrousel (4)

J: Ben Melham T: Team Freedman

Is simply a better horse than what she displayed when resuming this grade last start in the Gr 1 Underwood. Got stuck behind runners and just didn’t run on. And, she was well backed. Second up stats say she will run brilliantly in this. So give her another chance.

14. Duke De Sessa (7)

J: Declan Bates T: Ciaron Maher

Has found a new sense of character of late now that he has been ridden to the lead in his races. Was a game 2nd under 61kg to Young Werther this trip in fast time then led and good 4th to Buckaroo last start in the Gr 1 Underwood. This is harder but will be thereabouts and on speed all the way.

15. Knight's Choice (9)

J: Jordan Childs T: John Symons & Sheila Laxon

Good stayer who had to take off early and wide last start in the Underwood when he weakened late to run 9th to Buckaroo. This is harder. has placed at Gr 1 level but not keen.
