Gr 1 – South Australian Derby

Gr 1 racing continues this weekend with the running of the Derby in South Australia. We preview every runner, and find the top 4 home in the race. Good luck.

1. Single Choice (5)

J: Jamie Mott T: Matt Cumani

Is in terrific form winning two of past three starts both at stakes level, latest was this trip under 59 kg when he was on pace and just simply too good for Arabian Prince and Amazaki. Is going particularly well and looks very well-placed in this. Hard to beat.

2. Impulsive Reaction (10)

J: Daniel Moor T: Trent Busuttin & Nat Young

Another who has won two of his past three. Narrowly won a Cranbourne maiden then stepped up to Group 3 company and finished hard to win the Chairmans over 2000m from Boomeroo. Getting better with each start.

3. Kaye Jay (12)

J: Mark Zahra T: Clayton Douglas

Is smart and looks particularly hard to beat. He has only raced five times and has shown great staying talent, latest was when he was in Sydney for the Group one ATC Derby, this trip, and flashed home for fourth. Freshened up for this and should go very close.

4. Autumn Mystery (3)

J: Brad Rawiller T: Rory Hunter

Racing well last prep but this time up just hasn’t seemed to come back at all. Last start always well back and didn’t run on when beaten a long way by Impulsive Reaction in the Chairman’s. I’m not keen.

5. Savisanta (16)

J: Jye Mcneil T: Chris Waller

Trained by Chris Waller and when he brought that filly to town last week for the Oaks she won. This bloke has staying talent too, but was well beaten in the ATC Derby. Still, a Wallar runner needs to be respected.

6. Geneva (4)

J: Rory Hutchings T: Kylie Hoskin

This is a smart and improving Kiwi stayer. Was 3rd in their big Group one Derby over 2400m behind Road to Paris. Then, next start he was an easy winner at Manawatu at Listed level over 2100m. Sure to be in the fray.

7. Amazake (17)

Handy but is is still a maiden after nine starts, however, is showing a lot of staying talent. Finished hard when a nice third two Single Choice this trip at Caulfield last start. Rough place chance.

8. Engine Of War (8)

J: Daniel Stackhouse T: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Talented but a bit hit and miss. Lumped big weight in a BM 66 when 2nd at midweek level to Savitri. then ran home impressively when 4th to Impulsive Reaction. This is stronger but he looks like he can stay.

9. Flying Brant (13)

J: Jason Holder T: Stephen Theodore

Lightly raced local galloper with talent. Likes to be on pace which may be hard over this trip. He’s never raced 2400m before. Last start led the 2000m Chairman’s field for a long way before running 3rd. Place show.

10. Arabian Prince (19)

J: Jamie Melham T: Michael Kent

Terrible draw means he probably drops out early. Cantered home at Kilmore to win maiden then well supported when flashing home from near last in the 2400m at Caulfield last sart over this trip. I super fit and is certain to attract attention.

11. Cannae (14)

J: Craig Williams T: Danny O'Brien

Would need to be pretty good to win a Group 1 at just his 5th start, but he is doing everything right. After narrow Caulfield maiden win, came to Adelaide and was placed in a pair of stake races, latest when flying home from last of 11 at the bend for 3rd to McWoody in Port Ad Guineas over 1800m. Trained has landed a Melbourne Cup winner so he should be well prepped. Respect.

14. After Summer (18)

J: Billy Egan T: Dom Sutton

Be wary of this filly. But, where does she get to early from this bad gate? I think they will press forward and if she slots in, then she is a big chance. Was 3rd in a fast run VRC Oaks over 2500m last year, and latest starts have been 2nd in the Group 1 Vinery over 2000m in Sydney and a close up 3rd in fast time to Ohope Wins in the ATC Oaks this trip. Very fit.

Improving fillly. Won 3 of past 5 starts including last start where she simply raced away from her rivals to easily win the 2800m St Leger ay Flemington. Can obviously stay and worth a look at in this.

16. Kazaru (20)

Always well back and plodded home last week in the Oaks over 2000m here behind Panova. This is probably stronger but extra 400m may be in her favour. Rough place show.

17. Accidental Bid (Em1) (2)

J: John Allen T: Ciaron Maher

English bred galloper whose only 2 starts in Australia have been very impressive wins – but in weaker grade. Revelled in the mud last start winning as he pleased at Pakenham over 2000m under 60.5kg by nearly 8 lengths. Longer, harder race here but watch market.

18. Lunar Force (Em2) (7)

J: undefined T: Robbie Griffiths

Probably doesn’t gain a start here but has a bit of talent. Lightly raced and after sitting well back and deep for a good portion of the race, he made ground when 6th to Single Choice last start over 2000m. Not keen, but he’s not the worst either.
