Gr 1 racing starts this weekend in Perth with the time-honoured Railway Stakes. Ric Chapman unpacks every runner and finds the top 4.
1. Western Empire (1)
J: B Egan
T: Grant & A Williams
Burdened with a big weight but kinda deserves it and is ready to run a huge race. Especially as his big weight has been offset a great deal by drawing the rails. Drew wide and was well back until the turn when resuming last start. Flashed home, beaten 2 lengths by Super Smink and tends to like this trip even more. Strong claims.

2. Magnificent Andy (10)
J: B Parnham
T: S Miller
Long-time rival of Western Empire and as such also rates highly. Hasn’t drawn quite as well as him but did finish in front of him last start behind Super Smink in Gr 2 over 1400m. Last June this trip the pair fought out a thrilling Gr 3 Hyperion Cup. Has claims.

3. Iowna Merc (9)
J: S Mcgruddy
T: B Baker
It’s not often you see a horse shipped across the entire country in search of a Gr 1 after running last of 15 beaten 18 lengths at his most recent run. Yet, this bloke is doing just that. Connections are banking on the fact he can bounce back to the form which saw him beaten a nose by Rothfire in fast run Gr 3 Sydney Stakes. I’m not sure he can.

4. Super Smink (15)
J: C Parnham
T: D Morton
Top mare who is 3rd up and looms large. Loves this track. Had a dream run and was too strong late when beating In Good Order and a good few of these in the WFA Gr 2 over 1400m last start. Has not fared anywhere near as well this time at the barrier draw but should press forward and be in top 3 all the way.

5. In Good Order (2)
J: S O'Donnell
T: D Morton
Classy stayer who resumed from a long spell when beaten half a length by Super smink over 1400m last start. Started at $101 that day. Trip suits more and has great 2nd up stats so may sneak a place at big odds.

6. Osipenko (17)
J: T Clark
T: C Waller
Looks very hard to beat. Got his confidence back last start when dropped in grade and sprouted wings to win at Randwick over a mile on a slow track. Carried 62kg that day so drops 7kg for this. Very capable on his day.

7. Comfort Me (6)
J: H Watson
T: R Radford
Old-timer who likes to lead still and no doubt drives forward here too. Led and caught late when solid 3rd to Super Smink over 1400m last start. This is as far as he likes to go and may get swamped late.

J: C Johnston-Por
T: M Grantham
Such a talented and more importantly, versatile galloper who will shake this. Showed surprising dash to be on pace all the way when winning the Gr 3 from Comfort Me over 1400m when resuming. Has won over 2200m and is very smart 2nd up. Drawn perfectly. Looks one of the real hopes.

Proven Winner
9. Bustler (14)
J: S Parnham
T: N Parnham
This time last year was mixing it with the best over here but has lost some zip this year. On speed and weakened last start when beaten nearly 4 lengths by Super Smink. Not keen.

10. Let's Galahvant (16)
J: T Faithfull
T: Daniel & B Pearce
Was 16th for home yet powered home to grab 5th in this race year behind Port Lockroy. This year’s race is a bit harder. Not keen.

11. Sentimental Hero (11)
J: C Newitt
T: P Fernie
Old timer who has found his zest at home lately. Is trained in Kalgoorlie and recent efforts have been there and have been most impressive, last start leading for a good portion to win the 2300m Kalgoorlie Cup. This is a fair bit harder though.

12. Watch Me Rock (4)
J: W Pike
T: Grant & A Williams
Is the boom horse in the west at present. Has raced 10 times at this track for 8 wins and a placing. Latest was last start when perfectly ridden and finished hard to win the 1400m Asian Beau at Gr 3 level. Is extremely honest and although up in grade must be considered.
13. Admiration Express (8)
J: L Fiore
T: J Miller
Good mare, mostly consistent but in 2 starts this time up hasn’t really shown much. Last start was 8th throughout behind Super Smink. Not keen.

14. Depth Of Character (20)
J: R Jones
T: Annabel & R Archibald
Sydney galloper who is primed and ready to run a great race. Stablemate of last year’s winner of this race and his latest effort when flashing home from near last in the $10 million Golden Eagle to grab 4th behind the unbeaten Autumn Glow said this will suit. Loves this journey. Have in your numbers.

15. Ginger Baker (18)
J: J Azzopardi
T: Daniel & B Pearce
Very honest galloper. Carted 60kg to knock over Sentimental Hero who had 58kg over 1760m a few runs back. Last start was beaten 3 lengths by Super Smink over 1400m. Goes better this trip but garde here is tough. Badly drawn.

16. Storyville (13)
J: F Kersley
T: Grant & A Williams
Good mare who is on the quick back-up from last week when she stormed home to win the Gr 3 RJ Peters over 1500m. A mare in form… this is harder but she is honest.

18. Yonga Lass (Em2) (12)
J: Not Notified
T: Grant & A Williams
Resumed from spell with a great 2nd to Magnificent Andy but was thrashed last start behind Super Smink. Not keen.

19. Aztec Ruler (Em3) (19)
J: Not Notified
T: S Vahala
Has talent but that talent shines at Gr 3 level. Last week was finishing hard over 1500m when beaten a head by Storyville. Not keen.

20. Cosmic Crusader (Em4) (7)
J: Not Notified
T: M Grantham
Probably doesn’t gain a start but if he does he is a rough place hope because he is honest and can either lead or sit back. Loves it wet.
