Gr 1 Makybe Diva Stakes Preview

What a cracking Gr1 race the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington is this weekend. Ric Chapman maps and previews the contest.

1. Mr Brightside (4)

J: Craig Williams T: Team Hayes

Superstar. Drawn perfectly and will sit up in 2nd place from the get-go. Ran past his old rival Pride Of Jenni in the 1400m last start. She still holds a superior head-to-head record over him especially at this trip. Saying that, he looks back to his best and will run boldly.

J: Ben Allen T: Enver Jusufovic

Star who recorded his maiden Gr 1 win last start when he charged from midfield to roar past firstly Pride Of Jenni then Mr Brightside to claim the Gr 1 Memsie over 1400m at Caulfield in good time. Is super fit now, is 3rd up and has won at this trip. Saying all that, this race will be run differently so that finishing burst may not be quite as potent as last time. Is in form though.

3. Circle Of Fire (2)

J: Mark Zahra T: Ciaron Maher

Brilliant stayer on a Melbourne Cup course and resumes here. Did finish hard to completely outstay them to win the Gr 1 Sydney Cup over 3200m last start. Not likely to trouble these while fresh but watch to see him flying home for the Cups in a couple of months.

Enigmatic but when on he has a great deal of talent. Finished hard from last of 8 on the end when 4th to Pinstriped in the Gr 1 Memsie over 1400m last start. Has won this trip. Will get back and should run on ok again but not likely to trouble the placings.

5. Warmonger (3)

J: Michael Dee T: Mick Price & Michael Kent

Brilliant stayer who won the Gr 1 Queensland Derby last start over 2400m by 10 lengths! Is getting ready for the Cups. Probably settles midfield here and no doubt makes ground late. But winning this may be hard.

Interesting run when resuming last start when she led by only a length and was run over late in the Gr 1 Memsie over 1400m. She didn’t weaken, she just didn’t accelerate late and a couple who did, ran past her. I think connections this time around will use her mid-race speed and establish a big lead. If so, she wins easily. Could well be and should be 5 lengths clear when they turn for home. Looks a special.

7. Atishu (5)

J: Damian Lane T: Chris Waller

Is a multiple Gr 1 winner and can perform on wet or fast tracks. Is 2nd up here after being well beaten when resuming behind Via Sistina in Gr 1 Winx over 1400m. To counter that, she does love the Melbourne way of going but will get back and the bird may have flown by the time she gets into her gears.

What a brilliant racehorse with many a pundit claiming she is the best horse in the land. Certainly gave voice to that theory with her astonishing come-from-behind Gr 1 win in the 1400m Winx Stakes when resuming last start. This track will suit her a great deal too. Probably will need to sit a pair closer than she likes in the run. I see her in about 3rd to the bend then the hope is her world-class acceleration will kick in. The problem I see is that Pride Of Jenni may well be 6 lengths in front of her when they turn and we know Jenni doesn’t tire. What a great race this is going to be this year.
