Gr 1 – Golden Rose

Ric Chapman takes a look at the best 3YO field we've seen in years for us. It's the Golden Rose and will be run on a damp track. He analyses all hopes and finds the top 4.

1. Broadsiding (1)

J: J Mcdonald T: J Cummings

The fact James Cummings has put Jay Mac on this bloke intrigues me. You would think after Traffic Warden, his stablemate, had won so brilliantly last start that he would be the ride for the top jock. But no – this bloke is so that suggests the stable think he is flying. Was airborne and massively dominant as a 2YO, proving to be the best in the land. Should run boldly here first up. Did win a Gr 1 in the mud last prep also!

2. Traffic Warden (9)

J: B Melham T: J Cummings

Superstar and it is mind-boggling to imagine him as the stable’s no 2 rep in any race. His win first up was astounding and he is a Gr 1 winner who just looks a class above most. I think he runs the lights out in this and he doesn’t mind it wet either.

3. Storm Boy (11)

J: A Hyeronimus T: G Waterhouse & A Bott

What an interesting runner. Does look the best horse but he is stepping away a tad slowly these days then being hunted. Did that last start and was run over by Traffic Warden in lead-up race. From this gate he may have to work very hard or get caught deep. Is all class but trip and barrier worry me.

4. Linebacker (7)

J: K Mcevoy T: J O'Shea & T Charlton

No one could have missed the way he charged to the line when resuming last start in the Run To Rose when 4th to Traffic Warden. His last 400m was the fastest of any horse in the race and this trip suits him a great deal. Was brilliant winning a 1400m Gr 3 last campaign when 2nd up and behind him were Anode and Broadsiding. Huge threat. Loves the sting out of the ground too.

5. Anode (10)

Best Value
J: T Clark T: G Waterhouse & A Bott

This bloke is the dark horse. Will no doubt kick up from this wide draw and find the front early. At that point he can control the tempo. This looks his pet trip. Last start when resuming got the better of Storm Boy here in the Run To The Rose and looked the winner until Traffic Warden nailed on the line. Big threat.

6. Fearless (2)

J: T Berry T: P Snowden

Is more than handy and is a Gr 1 placgetter in the mud behind Broadsiding. Only plodded late when resuming and fading 7th to Traffic Warden and this is very strong. Not keen.

7. Mayfair (5)

J: B Shinn T: G Waterhouse & A Bott

Another who likes to lead so the pace will be on. And he has wet track form too. Chased Storm Boy home when resuming and 2nd in the 1100m San Domenico then last start led and run down late in the 1400m Ming Dynasty over 1400m. This is harder but he’ll be in the fray all the way.

8. Emirate (3)

J: N Rawiller T: C Waller

Won his first two starts in impressive fashion – both on very wet tracks. Then spelled. Resumed with a nice closing 5th to Traffic warden in the Run To Rose Gr 2. This is harder but he can finish his races.

9. Tropicus (6)

Lightly raced but has talent. Was 3rd to Storm Boy in the Gr 3 San Domenico over 1100m making ground late. This does look too hard, however.
