- Rosehill - Race 9
- (1100m)
- March 23, 2024
1. Private Eye (14)
I can’t say he was ridden well last start when he settled too far back on a track not suiting back markers yet he wound up well late and ran 6th beaten 1.55 lengths by Passive Aggressive over 1000m. Would he have won had it been 1100m? Maybe. In fact, he is unbeaten at this trip. Will settle back again but he loves it wet, looks back to his best, excels this trip and will be storming home. Big show.

3. Mazu (15)
Classy sprinter but gate is a hindrance. In a very fast run Gr 2 1000m Challenge last start he came hard late when 5th to Passive Aggresive but beat Private Eye home. Absolutely grows a leg when it is wet and gets a damp track here and he is good 2nd up too. Will be big odds but is right in this if they are running on.

4. Uncommon James (1)
has drawn perfectly and will ping, be in 4th on the fence with cover and travelling to the bend. He is a prolific Gr 1 placegetter and in fact ran 2nd in this very race last year. Looks well placed as he has just 1kg more. Have in your numbers.

5. Aft Cabin (8)
Absolutely rocketed home when 3rd to Passive Aggressive last start when resuming in the 1000m Challenge beating Masu and Private Eye to the wire. Has worked the house down during the week and the money has come in for him. Looks suited this journey and drawn to receive a beautiful run, one off and about four back. Big, big danger.

6. Buenos Noches (4)
This is the dark horse and he must be considered. Resumed from spell and just wasn’t ridden well when a fast closing 4th in quick time to King Of Sparta in the Gr 2 Expressway. Was sent to Melb and was running on when beaten just over 4 lengths by Cylinder in the 1200m Gr 1 Newmarket. Now, he is 3rd up this time so is very fit. Last prep he ran 1200m in 1.08.03 with 58.5kg. He also ran 1:02.91 for this trip. Only Private Eye has run faster than that for both trips in this field. Given he has drawn better than any horse and when you couple all the above together he looks the one to beat.

7. Kallos (12)
Good luck backing this bloke. He can win on his day but he can also jump slowly and ruin his hopes. He can also find trouble. But, he has run 1:02.90 for this trip at Caulfield under 58.5kg and that cannot be overlooked when assessing chances. Is 3rd up here.

8. Remarque (6)
Is always a threat in these races and does come out of that Gr 2 Challenge Stakes with the best weight turnaround, meaning his 4th in the race behind Passive Aggressive when beaten just on a length is form that holds up well here. Should get a great trip and loves this trip. Was 7th in this event last year.

9. Asfoora (17)
Interesting mare. Is 3rd up here and when last in work was a winner at Gr 2 level this trip beating Uncommon james. In fact, consistently beats him home in races and did beat Zapateo home two runs back. This draw is the query. Will probably go back and that means she will have to navigate a tough course home. is well in at the weights though and loves this trip.

10. Passive Aggressive (10)
An outstanding mare who looked brilliant coming home hard to win the Gr 2 Challenge over 1000m at Randwick from Zapateo, Aft Cabin, Remarque, Mazu and Private Eye. This time around she drops 2kg for that win and she has a stunning wet track record. If she finds cover in the run she is going to be hard to beat.

11. Sunshine In Paris (2)
Is very good but trip is the worry. Last campaign won the Gr 1 Surround over 1400m beating Gr 1 winners Ruthless dame and In secret, then backed that up to win the 1200m Sheraco at gr 2 level in very fast time beating Gr 1 winners Espiona, and Zapateo was 3rd. So she has the class and a good draw. But she will be about 8th on the fence turning for home and finding a run in this big field may prove tough.

Likes Dry Track
12. Zapateo (9)
Outstanding mare who is genuine and loves this trip. led and fought on gamely when 2nd in fast time last start behind Passive aggressive. Likes the track to be damp and gets that this time. Probably goes forward to find a spot in the top 4 early and if she gets cover she will be a player.

13. Ozzmosis (13)
This bloke will scare everyone because he’s in the field. Has raced 5 times, won 4 of them including a Gr 1 over 1200m. Is astonishingly fast when he needs to be and led all the way to win his Gr 1 at Flemington. Hasn’t raced for 5 months but is unbeaten in 2 goes when fresh. Weighted to win, but his one negative is – his only defeat was at this track. Watch the market. If the money comes, get on.

14. Front Page (16)
I went to the pool yesterday to do some laps and as I was taking my tired body out of the water I saw a big billboard and the very first words on it, in massive letters were FRONT PAGE. I thought there’s an omen tip. And, he is not without a chance here. Bad draw but I sense he will explode from the gate and he is weighted to win this. Has run 1:08.04 for 1200m which is very fast and did that with 59kg. Has no weight here. Have in your numbers.

16. King's Gambit (5)
Dual acceptor who is in the Gr 1 in Melbourne too. Having such a great draw and no weight makes him a major threat if he performs to his best. He loves this track but he was disappointing when there to win the Gr 1 Oakleigh Plate on the bend when resuming. If you forgive that run and he gets to settle just behind the pace he is a major player.

Ready to Fire
17. Derry Grove (7)
Good sprinter who can run fast times with big weights so will absolutely love this postage stamp on his back. But, he gets back in his races and this is first time in stakes company let alone Gr 1. may struggle.

18. Quick Tempo (18)
On the quick back-up from unplaced run in easier race last week here over this trip. Not keen.
