Gr 1 Australian Oaks

This is a great Gr 1 Australian Oaks field and Ric Chapman unpacks the chances of EVERY runner here. He's found the top 4 home!

1. Orchestral (3)

J: James Mcdonald T: Roger James & Rob Wellwood

New Zealand’s best filly and she came to Australia last start and prevailed in the Gr 1 Vinery over 2000m after an epic struggle with rival again here Tutta La Vita. Is very strong and determined and looks the one they all have to beat as she prefers this journey.

2. Quintessa (2)

J: Opie Bosson T: Mark Walker

Is a Gr 1 winner in NZ over a mile and last start at first go over 2040m she ran fast time to fail by a nostril in the Gr 2 Alister Clark at The Valley. Getting the trip is the obvious issue here and against two Classic winners already makes it even harder, but she must be in the mix as she is very smart.

3. Zardozi (9)

J: Tom Marquand T: James Cummings

This is Australia’s best staying 3yo filly and she can stay all day. Won the VRC Oaks over 2500m in the Spring and since resuming has won at stakes level and run a gallant hard-finishing 3rd to Orchestral and Tutta La vita in the 2000m Gr 1 Vinery. Will relish this track and distance and is a real player here.

4. Tutta La Vita (7)

J: Nash Rawiller T: Chris waller

What a game effort following a sensational ride by Nash Rawiller by this filly when 2nd, beaten narrowly by Orchestral in the 2000m Vinery at Gr 1 level. That has tightened her right up and she should be extremely fit for this. Must be in your numbers.

5. Autumn Angel (8)

J: Mark Zahra T: Peter Moody & Kath Coleman

This is a really tough, fit and game filly from Melbourne. Came to Sydney last week and on that very heavy track carried 61kg into 2nd spot behind Good Banter over 2000m in Gr 3 Adrian Knox. The winner carried 53kg. Back to set weights here and if that run didn’t burn her out, she will make her presence felt.

6. Basilinna (6)

J: Blake Shinn T: Team Browne

This is a Victorian filly with a lot of staying clout and she flies under the radar. Gets back but comes home hard. Was 3rd to Zardozi in the Gr 1 VRC Oaks last spring when immature and did run Autumn Angel at level weights to a head in the Gr 2 Kewney over a mile this time up. Genuine stayer who has won in the wet so respect her.

7. Dances With Hooves (4)

J: Craig Williams T: Cameron Crockett

Bush filly with loads of talent having won 3 of past 4 starts but this is a whole new level. Is bred to stay and won a mile race at Cl 1 level at Tamworth 2 starts back in fast time. May find these tough late however.

8. Piplup (10)

J: Jason Collett T: Brad Widdup

After winning a Hawkesbury mdn over 2000m in good time she stepped straight into gr 1 grade when 7th to orchestral in the 2000m Vinery. Was beaten 5 lengths that day. Gives the impression she can stay but this grade is tough.

9. True Fairy (1)

J: Noriyuki Masuda T: Daiki Chujo

Another bush filly who raced in the Gr 1 Vinery and was beaten 7 lengths by Orchestral after winning a Class 1 at grafton. This also should prove too hard.
