THE MASTERS – Augusta National Golf Club
The highly anticipated first Golf major of the season takes place at Augusta National Golf Club where players vie for the glory of winning the “Green Jacket” and becoming a Masters Champion for history.
It will be hard to beat the suspense of last year’s Masters when Rory McIlroy survived a tense play-off with English veteran Justin Rose to complete the “grand slam” winning all four golf majors during his career, but there is always a story that comes out of the Masters and hopefully an Australian can provide a magic moment at some stage of the event.
There will be four Australian’s lining up to contest for the “Green Jacket”. Our number one ranked golfer “The Chef” Min Woo Lee, who comes to Augusta with three top six finishes in the PGA Tour this season and a 3rd finish at Houston two weeks back. Former Masters Champion Adam Scott will be lining up for his 25th Masters and the 45 year old will be making his 99th Major Championship appearance. The other two Australians both have good records at the Masters with Cam Smith and Jason Day both having been runners-up in the event. Let’s hope Australian’s have a reason to get up early on Monday.
The favourite for the title will be two times Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler. His form this season has been solid having finished in the top 25 in all six starts with the one win to his name. Loves this course and he is sure to be somewhere thereabouts on the final day.
Thought this could be the year for Bryson DeChambeau. He was in contention with Rory last year but just could not get the job done. Sure to have the “fire in the belly” from his last 18 holes and with his long hitting game an advantage here he can add another major Championship to go along with two US Opens.
The form guide for the Masters always points to those players that have performed around this course in the past. With that in mind would be looking at previous winners like Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm or Hideki Matsuyama to figure prominently in the top 10.
Up and coming players to include in any selections for top 20 who have been playing well on the PGA Tour are Akshay Bhatia, Chris Gotterup and Ludvig Aberg.
