French Open Tips & Preview – Sebastian Korda V John Millman

WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up French Open tips for Aussie cult hero John Millman’s daunting first-round showdown with Sebastian Korda.

French Open Tips – Sebastian Korda V John Millman

00:00 (AEST), Tue 24th May @ Stade de Roland Garros, Paris

History: First meeting

Final Thoughts: Veteran Aussie John Millman has never won a French Open fixture in six attempts. But he’s had the misfortune to be drawn to face a top-30 player on each occasion.

Unfortunately for the 32-year-old, he’s been hamstrung by the draw again as he prepares to take on rising clay-court gun Sebastian Korda, the 27th seed.

Millman, a 2018 US Open quarter-finalist, does have a decent clay record. He made the Hungarian Open final in 2018 and racked up several ITF and Challenger final appearances on the surface in previous years.

The world No.93 beat out-of-sorts 2018-19 French Open finalist Dominic Thiem in the Serbia Open last month and reached the quarters as the top seed of a Challenger tournament two weeks ago. But he was bounced out in the first round of the Geneva Open last week by French stalwart Richard Gasquet, 6-3 6-1.

The 21-year-old Korda is lining up for just his seventh grand slam, but he powered to the fourth round on French Open debut in 2020. The son of 1992 French Open champ Petr Korda, young Sebastian won the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay and went down to Carlos Alcaraz in the Next Gen ATP Finals in an impressive 2021 season.

Meanwhile, Korda is the only player to beat the sensational Alcaraz on clay this year – at the Monte-Carlo Masters – and got to the Estoril Open semis with a win over top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Millman is your classic dogged competitor who makes his opponent earn every point. But Korda is the real deal and has his sights set on a potential third-round rematch with Alcaraz.
