WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up French Open tips for a showdown between first-time grand slam semi-finalists Martina Trevisan and Coco Gauff.

French Open Tips – Martina Trevisan V Coco Gauff

00:30 (AEST), Fri 3rd Jun @ Stade de Roland Garros, Paris

History: Played 1: Trevisan 1 V Gauff 0

Last meeting: French Open, 2020 (R64): Trevisan d Gauff 4-6 6-2 7-5

Final Thoughts: The women’s French Open surprise packet takes on a teenage phenom in the second semi-final – the first in a grand slam for both players.

World No.59 Martina Trevisan is 28 years old but playing in only her eighth major, making the quarter-finals on French Open debut in 2020. Eighteen-year-old Coco Gauff, the 18th seed, has been groomed for superstardom since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon at just 15 in 2019. But making the last eight at last year’s French Open is her best previous slam effort.

Trevisan shaped as a Roland Garros dark horse after winning the Morocco Open just prior to her arrival in Paris. She has capitalised on a relatively soft draw, beating Heather Dart, Magda Linette, Daria Gavrilova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets.

But the Italian stepped it up a gear to outlast 17th seed and 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-2 6-7 6-3 in the quarters.

Coco comes of age on slam stage

Gauff, who had fairly modest clay-court build-up to this campaign, is yet to drop a set or lose more than seven games in her five matches. The American overwhelmed Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytvanck, Kaia Kanepi and Elise Mertens, but former US Open champ and French Open finalist Sloane Stephens represented a massive quarter-final challenge.

Gauff was superb in a 7-5 6-2 victory, however, weathering the early storm before overwhelming her high-profile opponent. She pounced on Stephens’ second serve, winning 11 of 13 points.

Trevisan can take some confidence from beating Gauff in their only previous meeting – a second-round boilover during her unexpected 2020 French Open run. But Gauff’s game continues to mature and her superior range of shots should prove decisive given her current form-line.

Tip: Set Betting – Gauff 2-0 @ $1.83
