French Open Tips & Preview – Diego Schwartzman V Jan-Lennard Struff

Final Thoughts: French Open dark horse Diego Schwartzman squares off against world No.42 Jan-Lennard Struff in an intriguing fourth-round match-up.

Schwartzman has been in dominant form in Paris so far. The 10th seed is yet to drop a set and, has lost just four games on serve and has won by margins of at least eight games in eliminating Lu Yen-hsun, Aljaz Bedene and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

A French Open quarter-finalist in 2018, Schwartzman reached the semis last year. He encountered a Nadal-shaped roadblock on both occasions – and another quarter-final date with the ‘King of Clay’ looms if he can get past Struff.

The 28-year-old Argentine has bounced back impressively at Roland Garros after making three straight first-round exits in Madrid, Rome and Lyon.

Struff, 31, heads into just his second Round of 16 match in a Grand Slam. He went down to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at the 2019 French Open.

The German kicked off his campaign with a stunning five-set upset of seventh seed Andrey Rublev. He then powered past Facundo Bagnis and Calros Alcaraz Garfia in straight sets.

Struff reached the final of the Bavarian International in early-May during an otherwise underwhelming clay swing, his first ATP Tour final.

The ledger is square between the pair after two clashes. Schwartzman prevailed easily in a 2017 Monte Carlo Masters encounter, but Struff took the spoils in a 2019 Davis Cup tie.

The counter-punching Struff has looked more than capable throughout the first week and already has one big scalp to his name. But Schwartzman has regained his touch at just the right time. He is one of the tour’s most formidable players when he’s in this mood. If he isn’t looking prematurely ahead to a showdown with Rafa, Schwartzman should be far too strong here.
