Five best bets for Matchweek 21

Looking ahead to Matchweek 21 of the 2023/24 EPL season, we break down the five best bets for the weekend of Premier League action.

1. Manchester City & Over 2.5 goals vs Newcastle @ $2.15

Unbeaten in eight (all competitions), City have hit a purple patch. And with the reintroduction of star Kevin De Bruyne, Pep Guardiola’s men have set themselves up for a big second half of the EPL season. They face a Newcastle outfit who are struggling having lost five of their last six league matches, although bounced back with a confidence-boosting win over arch rivals Sunderland last weekend in the FA Cup. On average this EPL season, games involving City and Newcastle have averaged 3.47 and 3.4 goals respectively, so I’m doubling a City win with over 2.5 goals.

2. Tottenham H2H vs Manchester United @ $2.95

Few teams fear heading to Old Trafford these days — especially not an aggressive Spurs outfit who are good value in this one. Ange Postecoglou’s men are ticking along nicely having won five of their last six (all competitions) during a busy Christmas period. Man United, on the other hand, are all over the place, mixing good performances with the distinctly bad, and generally struggling to form any sort of consistency under Erik ten Hag. United’s nine defeats so far this EPL season is as many as they suffered in the whole of 2022-23.

Bet Now Manchester United vs Tottenham

3. West Ham H2H vs Sheffield United @ $2.05

The Hammers suffered a disappointing FA Cup draw against Bristol City last weekend, forcing them to play a replay during what is the EPL winter break, but aside from that their league form remains solid. There are lingering grumbles from fans about David Moyes’ style of play, but the fact remains that they have been successful at getting results to date this campaign, underlined by their position in sixth. Against a Sheffield United side rooted to the bottom of the table on just nine points, they should have enough to walk away with three points.

4. Nottingham Forest +1.0 vs Brentford @ $1.80

Forest have made a solid start to life under Nuno Espirito Santo, winning their last two EPL games against Newcastle and Manchester United. Brentford, by contrast, are on their toughest run in some time. Thomas Frank’s side have accrued just one point in their last six league matches. Which makes the return of Ivan Toney a huge boost for the Bees. However Forest either causing an upset or walking away with a draw in this one appears good value.

5. Fulham +1.0 vs Chelsea @ $2.35

Chelsea continue to be thoroughly unconvincing this season, underlining by their League Cup exit at the hands of Middlesbrough. Sure, two EPL wins came prior to that but again, they were far from convincing in victories over Luton and Crystal Palace. And in this West London derby, I’m backing Fulham to either nab an upset win or walk away with a point. Since the New Year the Cottagers have turned over Arsenal and pushed Liverpool all the way.
